Abstract: A model of a two-dimensional autonomous system subject to external noise is investigated. Without noise the system has a stable limit cycle in a certain region of control parameter. Various noise-induced effects have been found numerically, such as a noise-induced frequency shift in the presence of the deterministic limit cycle, and noise-induced coherent oscillations in the absence of the deterministic limit cycle. An interesting result is that the stochastic resonance phenomenon appears in a system without an external signal and when the asymptotic state of the deterministic system is stationary.

Abstract: In the social sciences, two prevailing definitions of risk are: (1) risk is a situation or event where something of human value (including humans themselves) is at stake and where the outcome is uncertain; (2) risk is an uncertain consequence of an event or an activity with respect to something that humans value. According to these definitions, risk expresses an ontology (a theory of being) independent of our knowledge and perceptions. In this paper, we look closer into these two types of definitions. We conclude that the definitions provide a sound foundation for risk research and risk management, but compared to common terminology, they lead to conceptual difficulties that are incompatible with the everyday use of risk in most applications. By considering risk as a state of the world, we cannot conclude, for example, about the risk being high or low, or compare different options with respect to risk. Abstract: CERAMICS based on silicon nitride and carbide are strong and stable at high temperatures, and are therefore under investigation for the fabrication of motor and turbine parts1–3. But silicon nitride decomposes at about 1,400 °C in vacuum and 1,775 °C in 0.1 MPa nitrogen4,5, limiting the high-temperature range of its technological uses. Here we describe a boron-containing silicon nitride/carbide ceramic that does not degrade at temperatures up to 2,000 °C even in nitrogen-free environments. We synthesize the material in a polymer-to-ceramic transformation6 from a single polymeric polyborosilazane precursor. On heating at 1,000 °C in argon we obtain a ceramic with the composition Si3.0B1.0C4.3N2.0. The ceramic begins to convert to a polycrystalline composite of silicon nitride and carbide (with some non-crystalline boron nitride) at 1,700 °C, a process that is completed (without substantial change in elemental composition) at 2,000 °C.

Abstract: The caspase 8 homologue FLICE-inhibitory protein (cFLIP) is a potent negative regulator of death receptor-induced apoptosis We found that cFLIP can be upregulated in some cell lines under critical involvement of the NF-κB pathway, but NF-κB activation was clearly not sufficient for cFLIP induction in all cell lines Treatment of SV80 cells with the proteasome inhibitor N-benzoyloxycarbonyl (Z)-Leu-Leu-leucinal (MG-132) or geldanamycin, a drug interfering with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-induced NF-κB activation, inhibited TNF-induced upregulation of cFLIP Overexpression of a nondegradable IκBα mutant (IκBα-SR) or lack of IκB kinase γ expression completely prevented phorbol myristate acetate-induced upregulation of cFLIP mRNA in Jurkat cells These data point to an important role for NF-κB in the regulation of the cFLIP gene SV80 cells normally show resistance to TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and TNF, as apoptosis can be induced only in the presence of low concentrations of cycloheximide (CHX) However, overexpression of IκBα-SR rendered SV80 cells sensitive to TRAIL-induced apoptosis in the absence of CHX, and cFLIP expression was able to reverse the proapoptotic effect of NF-κB inhibition Western blot analysis further revealed that cFLIP, but not TRAF1, A20, and cIAP2, expression levels rapidly decrease upon CHX treatment In conclusion, these data suggest a key role for cFLIP in the antiapoptotic response of NF-κB activation
