Abstract: Biofilms wasted from biotrickling filters was dried and used as biosorbent for Cd(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The adsorption condition and effect, adsorption isotherms and kinetics of Cd(II) removal were investigated, and the effects of competitive metal ions on Cd(II) removal were also examined. Results showed that the dry waste biofilms reached the maximum adsorption capacity of 42 mg/g of Cd(II) at 25 °C for 120 min when the initial concentration of Cd(II) and their pH were 50 mg/L and 6.0, respectively. Under these conditions, the removal efficiency of Cd(II) reached to 89.3% when the biosorbent dosage was 2.0 g/L. The Langmuir isotherm model correlated with the isotherm data better than the Freundlich isotherm model, and the pseudo-second-order model fitted the kinetic data better than the pseudo-first-order model. These results indicated that the adsorption was monolayer accompanied with chemical adsorption. In the presence of other metal ions, divalent metal ions of Ca and Zn inhibited the performance of Cd(II) biosorption significantly, while Na(I), K(I) and Fe(III) which had a higher or lower valence than Ca(II) affected slightly when containing 50 mg/L Cd(II), 0.5 g/L adsorbent dosage and pH 6.0. The analyses of scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy illuminated that the biosorbent had porous structures and the amide group was the majorly responsible for Cd(II) removal. Dry biofilms were novel sorbents for effective removal Cd(II), and it could be reused and recycled if necessary.

Abstract: Evaluation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are of great importance for the clinical diagnosis of several serious diseases correlated with their variations in human blood serum. In this study, a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probe was innovatively fabricated for the evaluation of AChE activity and the determination of OPs in tap water and food on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) between nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). N-CDs were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method by using pancreatin and 1,2-ethanediamine as precursors. N-CDs showed excellent fluorescence properties and negligible cytotoxicity on human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells and human embryonic kidney 293T cells, suggesting their further biological applications. Upon the addition of AChE and choline oxidase, acetylcholine was catalyzed to produce choline that was further oxidized to produce H2O2. In the presence of horseradish peroxidase, o-phenylenediamine reacted with H2O2 to produce fluorescent DAP. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescent probing platform existed via IFE between N-CDs with a fluorescence signal at 450 nm and DAP with a fluorescence signal at 574 nm. OPs irreversibly impeded the catalytic activity of AChE, finally leading to the decrease of DAP amount and the variation of ratiometric fluorescent signal. Under optimal conditions, such a fluorescent probe showed relatively low detection limits of 0.38 U/L for AChE, 3.2 ppb for dichlorvos, and 13 ppb for methyl-parathion. Practical application of this ratiometric fluorescent probe to detect OPs was further verified in tap water and food samples with satisfying results that were highly consisted with the results obtained by GC-MS.

Abstract: Web service recommendation has become a hot yet fundamental research topic in service computing. The most popular technique is the Collaborative Filtering (CF) based on a user-item matrix. However, it cannot well capture the relationship between Web services and providers. To address this issue, we first design a cube model to explicitly describe the relationship among providers, consumers and Web services. And then, we present a Standard Deviation based Hybrid Collaborative Filtering (SD-HCF) for Web Service Recommendation (WSRec) and an Inverse consumer Frequency based User Collaborative Filtering (IF-UCF) for Potential Consumers Recommendation (PCRec). Finally, the decision-making process of bidirectional recommendation is provided for both providers and consumers. Sets of experiments are conducted on real-world data provided by Planet-Lab. In the experiment phase, we show how the parameters of SD-HCF impact on the prediction quality as well as demonstrate that the SD-HCF is much better than extant methods on recommendation quality, including the CF based on user, the CF based on item and general HCF. Experimental comparison between IF-UCF and UCF indicates the effectiveness of adding inverse consumer frequency to UCF.
