The influence of alcohol, carbonate and polyethers as oxygenated fuels on the soot characteristics from a CI engine

TL;DR: In this article , the effect of the oxygenated fuels on the soot produced by a compression ignition engine was investigated using a differential mobility spectrometer, and the results showed that the addition of EtOH significantly reduced accumulation mode particle number concentrations by up to 70 % but promoted the formation of nucleation mode particles.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kinetics in the real world: linking molecules, processes, and systems

TL;DR: Reaction mechanisms can combine information gained from theory and experiments to enable the predictive simulation and optimisation of the crucial process variables and influences on the system's behaviour that may be exploited for both monitoring and control.
Journal ArticleDOI

How do the oxygenated functional groups in ether, carbonate and alcohol affect soot formation in Jet A2 diffusion flames?

TL;DR: In this paper , four oxygenated fuels: ethanol (EtOH), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), dimethoxymethane (DMM) and polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODE3) were blended with Jet A2 to investigate the sooting behaviour of the fuel mixtures.
Journal ArticleDOI

Experimental Study of the Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Lower Alcohols in a Constant Volume Vessel

TL;DR: In this article, the synergistic effects of chain length, functional group position, and equivalence ratio on combustion and emission characteristics of lower alcohols were investigated in a constant volume environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kinetics and mechanism of OH-mediated degradation of three pentanols in the atmosphere

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the kinetics and combustion mechanisms of pentanols triggered by hydroxyl radicals at the CCSD(T)/CBS/M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level and provided a necessary reference for the modeling of pentanol combustion and evolution.

Biofuels (alcohols and biodiesel) applications as fuels for internal combustion engines

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the production, characterization and current statuses of vegetable oil and biodiesel as well as the experimental research work carried out in various countries is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mechanism and modeling of nitrogen chemistry in combustion

TL;DR: In this article, the mechanisms and rate parameters for the gas-phase reactions of nitrogen compounds that are applicable to combustion-generated air pollution are discussed and illustrated by comparison of results from detailed kinetics calculations with experimental data.
Journal ArticleDOI

Environmental, economic, and energetic costs and benefits of biodiesel and ethanol biofuels

TL;DR: Transportation biofuels such as synfuel hydrocarbons or cellulosic ethanol, if produced from low-input biomass grown on agriculturally marginal land or from waste biomass, could provide much greater supplies and environmental benefits than food-basedBiofuels.
