Journal ArticleDOI

Elasticity of two-dimensional filaments with constant spontaneous curvature.

TL;DR: The results show that for a biopolymer with moderate length and not too small spontaneous curvature, the effect of the spontaneous curvatures cannot be replaced by a simple renormalization of the persistence length in the wormlike chain model.
Journal ArticleDOI

A molecular view of DNA flexibility.

TL;DR: A review of single-molecule experiments and molecular dynamics simulations that are providing novel insights into DNA mechanics from a molecular perspective can be found in this article, where the authors discuss sequence-dependent DNA mechanical properties, including sequences that resist mechanical stress and sequences that can accommodate strong deformations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Single Polymer Dynamics in A Random Flow

TL;DR: In this paper, a single fluorescently stained T4 DNA molecule is studied in a random flow of elastic turbulence created by the same unlabeled molecules, and the role of increasing shear rate on polymer extension and angular statistics is also studied and compared with theory and numerical simulations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oriented Purple Membrane Monolayers Covalently Attached to Gold by Multiple Thiole Linkages Analyzed by Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy

TL;DR: Highly oriented monolayers of bacteriorhodopsin in purple membrane (PM) form are obtained by the reaction of BR-Q3C, where a cysteine was introduced into the N-terminal region, with a gold surface.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nanomechanical properties of human prion protein amyloid as probed by force spectroscopy.

TL;DR: Single-molecule force spectroscopy is used to characterize the nanomechanical properties and molecular structure of amyloid fibrils formed by human prion protein PrP90-231 and indicates that the beta-sheet core of this amyloids starts at residue approximately 164-169, which has important implications for the ongoing debate regarding the structure of PrP amyloidal.

Direct mechanical measurements of the elasticity of single DNA molecules by using magnetic beads

TL;DR: Deviations from the force curves predicted by the freely jointed chain model suggest that DNA has significant local curvature in solution, and the effect of bend-inducing cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) was large and supports the hypothesis of natural curvatures in DNA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Application of the method of phage T4 DNA ligase-catalyzed ring-closure to the study of DNA structure. II. NaCl-dependence of DNA flexibility and helical repeat.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that it is possible to determine the molar cyclization factor jM from single ligation reactions in which both circular and linear dimer DNA species are formed concurrently from linear monomers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polymer conformational statistics. III. Modified Gaussian models of stiff chains

M. Fixman, +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a modified Gaussian probability for intrachain distances was used to account for polymer chain stiffness or excluded volume effects in non-Newtonian viscosity theory.
