TLDR
Not only are oxygen radicals involved in the cause of diabetes, they also appear to play a role in some of the complications seen in long-term treatment of diabetes.About:

Journal ArticleDOI
Rapid monitoring of diabetes-induced lipid peroxidation by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy : Evidence from rat liver microsomal membranes
TL;DR: In the current study, diabetes-induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomal membranes was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy at different temperatures and the intensity and area values of this band of diabetic samples were found to be increased significantly compared with nondiabetic samples.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased nadh oxidase activity in the retina of the bbz/wor diabetic rat
E. Ann Ellis,Maria B. Grant,Frederick T. Murray,Martha B. Wachowski,Dennis L. Guberski,Paul Kubilis,Gerard A. Lutty +6 more
TL;DR: This in vivo, morphological study is the first demonstration of oxidative injury and endothelial cell dysfunction in the retina of a spontaneous, noninsulin dependent model of diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary Antioxidant Intake and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Response to Granado-Lorencio and Olmedilla-Alonso
TL;DR: This study supports the hypothesis that development of type 2 diabetes may be reduced by the intake of antioxidants in the diet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of anti-oxidant treatment on sciatic nerve dysfunction in streptozotocin-diabetic rats; comparison with essential fatty acids.
TL;DR: Similar effects of antioxidants and evening primrose oil against reduced nerve Doppler flux and conduction velocity in diabetic rats, with dissimilar actions on plasma triglycerides and cholesterol are indicated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hypoglycemic and Antihyperlipidemic Effect of Four Korean Medicinal Plants in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats
TL;DR: The results suggest that the administration of C. coronarium and M. alba have a hypoglycemic effect in diabetic rats and their effect was equivalent to that of glibenclamide.

The generation of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide radical, and hydroxyl radical by 6-hydroxydopamine, dialuric acid, and related cytotoxic agents.
Gerald Cohen,Richard E. Heikkila +1 more
TL;DR: The results point to a reaction between H2O2 and O2- (Haber-Weiss reaction) as a major source of the ·OH radicals and to a combined action of blocking ·OH formation as well as accelerating its removal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Streptozotocin and alloxan induce DNA strand breaks and poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase in pancreatic islets.
TL;DR: It is described that both Streptozotocin and alloxan cause DNA strand breaks which stimulate nuclear poly(ADP–ribose) synthetase, thereby depleting intracellular NAD and inhibiting proinsulin synthesis in isolated pancreatic islets of rats.
Journal ArticleDOI
CuZn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in pancreatic islets and other tissues in the mouse.
TL;DR: Pancreatic islets were found to belong to tissues with relatively little activity of the protective enzymes, and the deviation from other tissues in this respect is probably not large enough to explain the especially great susceptibility of islet cells to alloxan.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lipid peroxide level in plasma of diabetic patients.
TL;DR: The data obtained with a large sample of patients, and the relation between the lipid peroxide level and the different features of the disease are dealt with.
