Response to "Theoretical aspects of autism: causes--a review" by Ratajczak, HV (Journal of Immunotoxicology 8:68-79, 2011).

TL;DR: Several recent studies indicate that vaccination, specifically the vaccination against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), does not increase the risk of autism, and the vaccine controversy arose from a single paper published in 1998, suggesting that the MMR vaccine was linked to autism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Autoimmune and gastrointestinal dysfunctions: does a subset of children with autism reveal a broader connection?

TL;DR: Sufficient evidence exists to support that a subgroup of children with autism may suffer from concomitant immune-related GI symptoms, and the available literature on the immunological and GI aspects of autism is evaluated.

Similar challenges but different responses: Media coverage of measles vaccination in the UK and China:

Do terbutaline- and mold-associated impairments of the brain and lung relate to autism?

TL;DR: Neuropsychological abnormalities were more frequent in mold-exp exposed than in terbutaline-exposed children and included digit symbol substitution, peg placement, fingertip number writing errors, and picture completion and the most frequent abnormality in both groups was balance.

The Autistic Spectrum

Lorna Wing
TL;DR: A simple system of subgrouping based solely on a description of the type of social impairment will be used, which avoids the confusion inherent in trying to identify the named syndromes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Abnormal intestinal permeability in children with autism.

TL;DR: It is speculated that an altered intestinal permeability could represent a possible mechanism for the increased passage through the gut mucosa of peptides derived from foods with subsequent behavioural abnormalities.
Journal ArticleDOI

A neurochemical theory of autism

TL;DR: Panksepp et al. as discussed by the authors put forward the idea that autism is an emotional disturbance arising from an upset in the opiate systems in the brain, and hence proposed, as a possibility, opiate antagonist therapy for the autistic syndrome.
