Mechanical properties and the hierarchical structure of bone

TLDR
Further investigations of mechanical properties at the "materials level", in addition to the studies at the 'structural level' are needed to fill the gap in present knowledge and to achieve a complete understanding of the mechanical properties of bone.

Morphological assessment of the behavior of three-dimensional anionic collagen matrices in bone regeneration in rats.

TL;DR: The osteogenic behavior of three-dimensional collagenic and anionic matrices implanted in critical bone defects of 8 mm diameter was morphologically assessed and tissue neovascularization and neomineralization was noted.
Journal ArticleDOI

Osteocyte lacunar strain determination using multiscale finite element analysis

TL;DR: Finite element model findings suggest that orientation and lacunar size may contribute to the heterogeneous initial pattern of osteocyte strain response observed in bone following in vivo applied mechanical loads.

Full-Field Calcium K-Edge X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure Spectroscopy on Cortical Bone at the Micron-Scale: Polarization Effects Reveal Mineral Orientation

TL;DR: The data suggest that neither the anatomical site (tibia vs jaw) nor pathology (healthy vs necrotic jaw bone tissue) affected the averaged spectral shape of the XANES spectra, and the polarization based assessment of calcium-containing crystal orientation and specification of calcium in a beta-tricalcium phosphate scaffold implanted into ovine bone is demonstrated.

Time-resolved in situ synchrotron-microCT: 4D deformation of bone and bone analogues using digital volume correlation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the deformation of bone structures and analogues via continuous in situ synchrotron-radiation microCT (SR-microCT) compression and DVC to gain a better insight into their structure-function relationships.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fem Sensitivity Analyses on the Stress Levels in a Human Mandible with a Varying ATM Modelling Complexity

TL;DR: In this paper, the structural behavior of a mandible considering a unilateral occlusion is numerically analyzed by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM), where the mandible, considered as completely edentolous, is modelled together with its articular disks, whose material behaviour is assumed as elastic or hyper-elastic.

The compressive behavior of bone as a two-phase porous structure.

TL;DR: These power relationships, which were shown to hold for all bone in the skeleton, allow meaningful predictions of bone tissue strength and stiffness based on in vivo density measurements.

Young's modulus of trabecular and cortical bone material: ultrasonic and microtensile measurements.

TL;DR: The results suggest that when considered mechanically, cortical and trabecular bone are not the same material.

The mechanical behaviour of cancellous bone

TL;DR: The results of this previous study are applied to cancellous bone in an attempt to further understand its mechanical behaviour and the results agree reasonably well with experimental data available in the literature.

Elastic properties of human cortical and trabecular lamellar bone measured by nanoindentation

TL;DR: An experimental investigation was undertaken to measure the intrinsic elastic properties of several of the microstructural components of human vertebral trabecular bone and tibial cortical bone by the nanoindentation method, and differences in the measured moduli are statistically significant.
