Mechanical properties and the hierarchical structure of bone

TLDR
Further investigations of mechanical properties at the "materials level", in addition to the studies at the 'structural level' are needed to fill the gap in present knowledge and to achieve a complete understanding of the mechanical properties of bone.

Fabrication of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys with Graded Porosity to Imitate Human Long-bone Structure

TL;DR: In this article, a NiTi Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) constructed with graded porosity imitating human long bone structure was fabricated via a dedicated molding procedure, and the outer layer and inner layer of the bone-like graded NiTi alloy were found to be co-axial very well with the interface with a good metallurgical bonding.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sex and ethnic differences in bone architecture

TL;DR: New methods using magnetic resonance imaging technology may become important in creating efficient and reliable in vivo methods of assessing features of bone architecture that are relevant to fracture risk and contribute to the elucidation of sex and ethnic differences in osteoporosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ultrastructure of regenerated bone mineral surrounding hydroxyapatite-alginate composite and sintered hydroxyapatite.

TL;DR: It is observed that the regenerated bone surrounding both biomaterials had a lamellar structure with type I collagen fibers alternating in adjacent lamella with angles of approximately 90°, and hydroxyapatite crystals were aligned in the c-axis direction, although a rotation around the c -axis could be present.
Journal ArticleDOI

Grafting carbon nanotubes onto carbon fibres doubles their effective strength and the toughness of the composite

TL;DR: In this paper, a multiscale composite structure with carbon nanotubes and conventional carbon fiber reinforcements in a polyvinyl butyral matrix is proposed to improve the composite toughness, reaching more than twice the value for the conventional, nonhierarchically reinforced composite.

Enhanced cellular responses to titanium coating with hierarchical hybrid structure

TL;DR: Combining the advantages in the mechanical fixation and long-term stability of the plasma sprayed porous TC, the HSTC with a hierarchical structure may be a good candidate for hard tissue replacements, especially for load-bearing implants.

The compressive behavior of bone as a two-phase porous structure.

TL;DR: These power relationships, which were shown to hold for all bone in the skeleton, allow meaningful predictions of bone tissue strength and stiffness based on in vivo density measurements.

Young's modulus of trabecular and cortical bone material: ultrasonic and microtensile measurements.

TL;DR: The results suggest that when considered mechanically, cortical and trabecular bone are not the same material.

The mechanical behaviour of cancellous bone

TL;DR: The results of this previous study are applied to cancellous bone in an attempt to further understand its mechanical behaviour and the results agree reasonably well with experimental data available in the literature.

Elastic properties of human cortical and trabecular lamellar bone measured by nanoindentation

TL;DR: An experimental investigation was undertaken to measure the intrinsic elastic properties of several of the microstructural components of human vertebral trabecular bone and tibial cortical bone by the nanoindentation method, and differences in the measured moduli are statistically significant.
