Physics basis and design of the ITER plasma-facing components

TLDR
The ITER PFC design has now reached a rather mature stage following the 2007 ITER Design Review as discussed by the authors, and the key elements of the design, reviews the physics drivers, essentially thermal load specifications, which have defined the concept and discusses a selection of material and design issues.

A full tungsten divertor for ITER: Physics issues and design status

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the risks engendered by the baseline divertor strategy with regard to known W plasma-material interaction issues and briefly present the current status of a possible full-tungsten (W) divertor design.
Journal ArticleDOI

Designing Radiation Resistance in Materials for Fusion Energy

TL;DR: In this article, three fundamental options for designing radiation resistance are outlined: Utilize matrix phases with inherent radiation tolerance, select materials in which vacancies are immobile at the design operating temperatures, or engineer materials with high sink densities for point defect recombination.

Edge-localized-modes in tokamaksa)

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that when the gradient in the H-mode transport barrier grows to exceed the MHD stability limit, the ELM instability grows explosively, rapidly transporting energy and particles onto open field lines and material surfaces.

Evidence for a poloidally localized enhancement of radial transport in the scrape-off layer of the Tore Supra tokamak

TL;DR: In this paper, the poloidal variation of the parallel flow has been measured by moving the contact point of a small circular plasma onto limiters at different poloidal angles, and the resulting variations of flow are consistent with the existence of a poloidally localized enhancement of radial transport concentrated in a 30° sector near the outboard midplane.

Edge and divertor physics with reversed toroidal field in JET

TL;DR: A recent campaign of reversed field operation at JET designed to match a variety of discharges to their more frequently executed forward field counterparts has been executed in an attempt to contribute to this understanding as mentioned in this paper.

Codeposition of deuterium with ITER materials

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the levels of retention in codeposited layers of each of the three ITER materials (C, Be and W) and presented scaling laws, based on the conditions during the codeposition process (surface temperature, incident particle energy and ratio of the depositing fluxes), to allow prediction of expected retention under ITER conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

An empirical scaling for deuterium retention in co-deposited beryllium layers

TL;DR: In this paper, a scaling equation was developed to predict the retention in Be co-deposits formed in PISCES-B as a function of the layer formation conditions, and relatively good agreement was found with the prediction of the scaling equation.
