Physics basis and design of the ITER plasma-facing components

TLDR
The ITER PFC design has now reached a rather mature stage following the 2007 ITER Design Review as discussed by the authors, and the key elements of the design, reviews the physics drivers, essentially thermal load specifications, which have defined the concept and discusses a selection of material and design issues.

Effects of ELM mitigation coils on energetic particle confinement in ITER steady-state operation

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of edge-localized mode (ELM) mitigation coils on the loss of NBI-produced fast ions and fusion-produced alpha particles are investigated using an orbit following Monte Carlo code.
Journal ArticleDOI

Narrow heat flux channels in the COMPASS limiter scrape-off layer

TL;DR: The ITER first wall is toroidally shaped in order to spread the incident parallel power flux uniformly, assuming a single decay length λq whose value is not known from first principles as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of plasma response on the fast ion losses due to ELM control coils in ITER

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present results of fusion alpha and NBI ion losses in the ITER baseline scenario modelled with the Monte Carlo orbit following code ASCOT in a realistic magnetic field including the effect of the plasma response.
Journal ArticleDOI

Shielding materials in the compact spherical tokamak

TL;DR: Some fundamental materials properties of monolithic tungsten carbide including thermal transport, mechanical properties and plasma interaction are considered, and WC is found to have generally favourable properties compared to metallic tsungsten shields.

Transport-driven Scrape-Off-Layer flows and the boundary conditions imposed at the magnetic separatrix in a tokamak plasma

TL;DR: In this paper, topology-dependent flow boundary conditions on the confined plasma were investigated in the low and high-field side scrape-off-layer (SOL) regions in Alcator C-Mod.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fluctuations and transport in the TCV scrape-off layer

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the particle and radial flux density statistics in the scrape-off layer of TCV plasmas and direct comparison with two-dimensional interchange turbulence simulations at the outer midplane.
Journal ArticleDOI

Status and physics basis of the ITER divertor

TL;DR: The ITER divertor design is the culmination of years of physics and engineering effort, building confidence that this critical component will satisfy the requirements and meet the challenge of burning plasma operation as discussed by the authors.
