Physics basis and design of the ITER plasma-facing components

TLDR
The ITER PFC design has now reached a rather mature stage following the 2007 ITER Design Review as discussed by the authors, and the key elements of the design, reviews the physics drivers, essentially thermal load specifications, which have defined the concept and discusses a selection of material and design issues.

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed analysis of the plasma-facing components of the day-one tungsten divertor in ITER-like wall has been carried out, showing that the pattern of deposition within the divertor has changed significantly with respect to the JET carbon wall campaigns due to the absence of thermally activated chemical erosion of beryllium in contrast to carbon.

Material testing facilities and programs for plasma-facing component testing

TL;DR: In this article, a survey of the available and planned test stands and their specific capabilities is presented, together with an extended set of references providing access to the current status of material and component testing capabilities in international fusion programs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Progress in the engineering design and assessment of the European DEMO first wall and divertor plasma facing components

TL;DR: The system requirements are presented and bespoke thermo-mechanical and thermohydraulic assessment procedures which have been used as tools for design are described, along with the current first wall and divertor designs.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Development of the Material Plasma Exposure Experiment

TL;DR: The material plasma exposure experiment (MPEX) as discussed by the authors is a steady-state device designed for the exposure of a priori neutron-irradiated samples in the divertor of a future fusion reactor.

Transport-driven Scrape-Off-Layer flows and the boundary conditions imposed at the magnetic separatrix in a tokamak plasma

TL;DR: In this paper, topology-dependent flow boundary conditions on the confined plasma were investigated in the low and high-field side scrape-off-layer (SOL) regions in Alcator C-Mod.

Fluctuations and transport in the TCV scrape-off layer

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the particle and radial flux density statistics in the scrape-off layer of TCV plasmas and direct comparison with two-dimensional interchange turbulence simulations at the outer midplane.

Status and physics basis of the ITER divertor

TL;DR: The ITER divertor design is the culmination of years of physics and engineering effort, building confidence that this critical component will satisfy the requirements and meet the challenge of burning plasma operation as discussed by the authors.
