Physics basis and design of the ITER plasma-facing components

TLDR
The ITER PFC design has now reached a rather mature stage following the 2007 ITER Design Review as discussed by the authors, and the key elements of the design, reviews the physics drivers, essentially thermal load specifications, which have defined the concept and discusses a selection of material and design issues.

Plasma-surface interaction experimental device: PSIEC and its first plasma exposure experiments on bulk tungsten and coatings

TL;DR: A new laboratory-scale linear plasma device, PSIEC (Plasma-Surface Interaction system under Extreme Conditions), has been designed and constructed at Hefei University of Technology, China, to study plasma-material interactions for fusion reactor application as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Surface binding energies of beryllium/tungsten alloys

TL;DR: In this article, the surface binding energies of beryllium and tungsten atoms on surfaces of the alloys Be 2 W and Be 12 W were obtained from density functional theory calculations.

Analysis of structural changes and high-heat-flux tests on pre-damaged tungsten from tokamak melt experiments

TL;DR: In this article, the characteristics of W plasma-facing components under high heat fluxes were investigated in view of the material choice for the divertor in future fusion devices, and the material structure after exposure and the cracking thresholds and patterns under repetitive transient thermal loads were investigated.

Performance assessment of long-legged tightly-baffled divertor geometries in the ARC reactor concept

TL;DR: In this paper, an impurity-free divertor power handling scenario has been obtained in edge modelling for a tokamak fusion power reactor with projected heat flux power width (λq||) of 0.4 mm and power exhaust of 93 MW.

Additive manufacturing of high density pure tungsten by electron beam melting

TL;DR: In this paper, a selective electron beam melting and a base temperature of 1000°C of the powder was used to produce tungsten with a theoretical density of 99% without the need of any post-treatment like a second melting step or a redensification by e.g. hot isostatic pressing (HIP).
