Rectangular and hexagonal grids used for observation, experiment and simulation in ecology

TLDR
This work considers modelling and other applications, including the role of nearest neighbourhood in experimental design, the representation of connectivity in maps, and a new method for performing field surveys using hexagonal grids, which was demonstrated on montane heath vegetation.

The Impact of Conservation on the Status of the World’s Vertebrates

Michael R. Hoffmann, +173 more
- 10 Dec 2010 -
TL;DR: Though the threat of extinction is increasing, overall declines would have been worse in the absence of conservation, and current conservation efforts remain insufficient to offset the main drivers of biodiversity loss in these groups.

Global congruence of carbon storage and biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors use the best available global data sets on terrestrial biodiversity and carbon storage to map and investigate potential synergies between carbon and biodiversity-oriented conservation, and find that the synergies would be high, but unevenly distributed.

Combinatorial Image Analysis

TL;DR: This volume presents the proccedings of the 11th International Workshop on Combinatorial Image Analysis, IWCIA 2006, which covered combinatorial image analysis, grammars and models for analysis and recognition of scenes or images, Combinatorial topology and geometry for images, digital geometry of curves or surfaces, algebraic approaches to image processing, image, point-clouds or surface registration as well as fuzzy and probabilistic image analysis.

Using Landsat and nighttime lights for supervised pixel-based image classification of urban land cover

TL;DR: An efficient and low-cost machine-learning approach for pixel-based image classification of built-up areas at a large geographic scale using Landsat data is presented, which combines nighttime-lights data and Landsat 8 and overcomes the lack of extensive ground-reference data.

Mapping the forest disturbance regimes of Europe

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used satellite data to map three decades of forest disturbances across continental Europe, and analyzed the patterns and trends in disturbance size, frequency and severity, finding that 17% of Europe's forest area was disturbed by anthropogenic and/or natural causes.

Spatial Tessellations: Concepts and Applications of Voronoi Diagrams

TL;DR: In this article, the Voronoi diagram generalizations of the Voroni diagram algorithm for computing poisson Voroni diagrams are defined and basic properties of the generalization of Voroni's algorithm are discussed.

Tilings and patterns

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a comprehensive reference on tiling theory for many decades, bringing together older results that have not been brought together before, and containing a wealth of new material.

To Be, or Not to Be Spatial--That Is the Question@@@Spatial Ecology: The Role of Space in Population Dynamics and Interspecific Interactions

TL;DR: The book aims to demonstrate that the spatial structure of a habitat can fundamentally alter both the qualitative and quantitative dynamics and outcomes of ecological processes.
