What’s normal? Oligosaccharide concentrations and profiles in milk produced by healthy women vary geographically

TLDR
The hypothesis that normal HMO concentrations and profiles vary geographically, even in healthy women is supported and targeted genomic analyses are required to determine whether these differences are due at least in part to genetic variation.

Variations in the Composition of Human Milk Oligosaccharides Correlates with Effects on Both the Intestinal Epithelial Barrier and Host Inflammation: A Pilot Study

TL;DR: Evidence is provided of both shared and distinct effects on the host intestinal epithelial function that are attributable to inter-individual differences in the composition of human milk oligosaccharides.

Environmental determinants of human milk composition in relation to health outcomes

TL;DR: Current literature shows lactation is a dynamic process and is responsive to multiple environmental challenges including geographical location, lifestyle, persistent pollutants and maternal factors that may influence human milk composition in a synergistic manner and should be considered in order to improve infant and maternal outcomes on a populations scale.

A human milk oligosaccharide, 2′-fucosyllactose, enhances the immunity in mice fed an infant formula milk diet

TL;DR: The immune effect of 2′-fucosyllactose in mice fed an infant formula (IF) milk diet was studied and there was a significant increase in thymus index in high dose 2′FL group.

Controlling the false discovery rate: a practical and powerful approach to multiple testing

TL;DR: In this paper, a different approach to problems of multiple significance testing is presented, which calls for controlling the expected proportion of falsely rejected hypotheses -the false discovery rate, which is equivalent to the FWER when all hypotheses are true but is smaller otherwise.

Metagenes and molecular pattern discovery using matrix factorization.

TL;DR: Nonnegative matrix factorization is described, an algorithm based on decomposition by parts that can reduce the dimension of expression data from thousands of genes to a handful of metagenes, and found less sensitive to a priori selection of genes or initial conditions and able to detect alternative or context-dependent patterns of gene expression in complex biological systems.
