Journal ArticleDOI
The mitochondrial derived peptide humanin is a regulator of lifespan and healthspan.
Kelvin Yen,Hemal H. Mehta,Su-Jeong Kim,Yanhe Lue,James Hoang,Noel Guerrero,Jenna Port,Qiuli Bi,Gerardo Navarrete,Sebastian Brandhorst,Kaitlyn N. Lewis,Junxiang Wan,Ronald S. Swerdloff,Julie A. Mattison,Rochelle Buffenstein,Carrie V. Breton,Christina Wang,Valter D. Longo,Gil Atzmon,Gil Atzmon,Douglas C. Wallace,Nir Barzilai,Pinchas Cohen +22 more
TL;DR: This study reports that in C. elegans the overexpression of humanin is sufficient to increase lifespan, dependent on daf-16/Foxo, and is the first to demonstrate thathumanin is linked to improved healthspan and increased lifespan.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mitochondria and Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.
Journal Article
Genetic studies on the Tharu population of Nepal: restriction endonuclease polymorphisms of mitochondrial DNA.
A. Brega,R Gardella,Ornella Semino,G Morpurgo,G B Astaldi Ricotti,Douglas C. Wallace,A. S. Santachiara Benerecetti +6 more
TL;DR: The mitochondrial DNAs of 91 Tharus from Nepal were screened for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) using six highly informative restriction endonucleases and it was concluded that the Tharu mtDNAs are closely related to those of other Oriental populations.
Journal Article
Mitochondrial disease genetic diagnostics: optimized whole-exome analysis for all MitoCarta nuclear genes and the mitochondrial genome.
Marni J. Falk,Eric A. Pierce,Mark Consugar,Michael H. Xie,Moraima Guadalupe,Owen Hardy,Eric F. Rappaport,Douglas C. Wallace,Emily M LeProust,Xiaowu Gai +9 more
TL;DR: The "1:100 Mito-Plus Whole-Exome" Agilent capture kit offers an optimized tool for whole-exome analysis of nuclear and mtDNA genes relevant to the diagnostic evaluation of mitochondrial disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phy-Mer: a novel alignment-free and reference-independent mitochondrial haplogroup classifier.
Daniel Navarro-Gomez,Jeremy Leipzig,Lishuang Shen,M. T. Lott,Alphons P. M. Stassen,Douglas C. Wallace,Janey L. Wiggs,Marni J. Falk,Mannis van Oven,Xiaowu Gai +9 more
TL;DR: This work has developed a novel mitochondrial genome haplogroup-defining algorithm using a k-mer approach namely Phy-Mer, which performs equally well as the leading haplogroups classifier, HaploGrep, while avoiding the errors that may occur when preparing variants to required formats and notations.
