TL;DR: The sequence of the P. infestans genome is reported, which at ∼240 megabases (Mb) is by far the largest and most complex genome sequenced so far in the chromalveolates and probably plays a crucial part in the rapid adaptability of the pathogen to host plants and underpins its evolutionary potential.
Journal ArticleDOI
Host-Parasite Coevolutionary Conflict Between Arabidopsis and Downy Mildew
Rebecca L. Allen,Peter D. Bittner-Eddy,Laura J. Grenville-Briggs,Julia C. Meitz,Anne P. Rehmany,Laura E. Rose,Jim Beynon +6 more
TL;DR: Evidence of diversifying selection visible in both components suggests that the host and pathogen may be locked in a coevolutionary conflict at these loci, where attempts to evade host resistance by the pathogen are matched by the development of new detection capabilities by the host.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome sequence of the necrotrophic plant pathogen Pythium ultimum reveals original pathogenicity mechanisms and effector repertoire

Tyler,Ronald P. de Vries,Sophien Kamoun,Mark Yandell,Ned Tisserat,C. Robin Buell +49 more
TL;DR: Access to the P. ultimum genome has revealed not only core pathogenic mechanisms within the oomycetes but also lineage-specific genes associated with the alternative virulence and lifestyles found within the pythiaceous lineages compared to the Peronosporaceae.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinctive Expansion of Potential Virulence Genes in the Genome of the Oomycete Fish Pathogen Saprolegnia parasitica

Sykes,Sucheta Tripathy,Herbert van den Berg,Julio Vega-Arreguín,Stephan Wawra,Sarah Young,Qiandong Zeng,Javier Diéguez-Uribeondo,Carsten Russ,Brett M. Tyler,Pieter van West +41 more
TL;DR: Comparison of S. parasitica with plant pathogenic oomycetes suggests that during evolution the host cellular environment has driven distinct patterns of gene expansion and loss in the genomes of plant and animal pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cellulose Synthesis in Phytophthora infestans Is Required for Normal Appressorium Formation and Successful Infection of Potato
Laura J. Grenville-Briggs,Victoria L. Anderson,Johanna Fugelstad,Anna O. Avrova,Jamel Bouzenzana,Alison Williams,Stephan Wawra,Stephen C. Whisson,Paul R. J. Birch,Vincent Bulone,Pieter van West +10 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the isolated genes are involved in cellulose biosynthesis and that cellulose synthesis is essential for infection by P. infestans.
