Abstract: Risk factors in contact lens related suppurative keratitis were investigated. Over 12 months, sixty contact lens wearers presented with presumed microbial keratitis and 147 presented with presumed sterile keratitis. The control group consisted of contact lens wearers without lens related disorders (n = 507). The relative risk of microbial keratitis for extended wear soft contact lens users were 36.8 times (12.6-107.6) that of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens users; while the relative risk of sterile keratitis among extended wear soft lens users was 4.6 times (2.2-9.9) that of RGP lens users. For daily wear soft contact lens users, the relative risk of microbial keratitis was 4.2 times (1.1-16.0) that of RGP lens wearers; for sterile keratitis the relative risk was 2.3 times (1.3-4.3) greater than RGP contact lens users. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine associated risk factors for daily and extended wear soft lens users. The type of disinfection system and its frequency of use were associated with both microbial keratitis and sterile keratitis in daily wear users. Duration of overnight wear and gender were associated with microbial keratitis, while a patient's age and socioeconomic class were associated with sterile keratitis. Different relative risks and risk factors for microbial keratitis and sterile keratitis support the use of a clinical definition to differentiate the diseases.

Abstract: This article reviews a selected set of location-based services (LBS) that have been published in the research literature, focussing on mobile guides, transport support, gaming, assistive technology and health. The research needs and opportunities in each area are evaluated and the connections between each category of LBS are discussed. The review illustrates the enormous diversity of forms in which LBS are appearing and the wide range of application sectors that are represented. However, very few of these applications are implemented pervasively on a commercial basis as this is still challenging technically and economically.

Abstract: In section 1 we discuss the need for economic regulation in infrastructure industries and how this need is met in state-owned and privately owned utilities. In section 3 we discuss regulatory commitment and its implications for regulatory governance as well as the potential role of concession contracts for regulatory commitment. Section 4 provides an exposition of regulatory governance its implications for institutional design and regulatory processes and practices and the concepts of formal and informal accountability. Ftom this discussion we derive our six criteria for appraising regulatory systems. Section 5 concludes the paper with an application of these appraisal criteria to 12 infrastructure industries in developing Asian economies. We report the main results and discuss trens including trends towards convergence of regulatory frameworks and the implications for private investment in Asian developing countries' infrasture.

Abstract: Current advances in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in general, and deep learning in particular have reached unprecedented impact not only across research communities, but also over popular media channels. However, concerns about interpretability and accountability of AI have been raised by influential thinkers. In spite of the recent impact of AI, several works have identified the need for principled knowledge representation and reasoning mechanisms integrated with deep learning-based systems to provide sound and explainable models for such systems. Neural-symbolic computing aims at integrating, as foreseen by Valiant, two most fundamental cognitive abilities: the ability to learn from the environment, and the ability to reason from what has been learned. Neural-symbolic computing has been an active topic of research for many years, reconciling the advantages of robust learning in neural networks and reasoning and interpretability of symbolic representation. In this paper, we survey recent accomplishments of neural-symbolic computing as a principled methodology for integrated machine learning and reasoning. We illustrate the effectiveness of the approach by outlining the main characteristics of the methodology: principled integration of neural learning with symbolic knowledge representation and reasoning allowing for the construction of explainable AI systems. The insights provided by neural-symbolic computing shed new light on the increasingly prominent need for interpretable and accountable AI systems.

Abstract: We investigate the general features of renormalization group flows near superconformal fixed points of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with gravity duals. The gauge theories we study arise as the world-volume theory on a set of D-branes at a Calabi-Yau singularity where a del Pezzo surface shrinks to zero size. Based mainly on field theory analysis, we find evidence that such flows are often chaotic and contain exotic features such as duality walls. For a gauge theory where the del Pezzo is the Hirzebruch zero surface, the dependence of the duality wall height on the couplings at some point in the cascade has a self-similar fractal structure. For a gauge theory dual to CP^2 blown up at a point, we find periodic and quasi-periodic behavior for the gauge theory couplings that does not violate the a-conjecture. Finally, we construct supergravity duals for these del Pezzos that match our field theory beta functions.
