TL;DR: It was found that increased monoterpenoid tolerance can counteract efficient biotransformation ability, indicating the need for a fine-tuned and knowledge-based tolerance improvement for production strain development.
Abstract: Monoterpenoids are widely used in industrial applications, e.g. as active ingredients in pharmaceuticals, in flavor and fragrance compositions, and in agriculture. Severe toxic effects are known for some monoterpenoids making them challenging compounds for biotechnological production processes. Some strains of the bacterium Pseudomonas putida show an inherent extraordinarily high tolerance towards solvents including monoterpenoids. An understanding of the underlying factors can help to create suitable strains for monoterpenoids de novo production or conversion. In addition, knowledge about tolerance mechanisms could allow a deeper insight into how bacteria can oppose monoterpenoid containing drugs, like tea tree oil. Within this work, the resistance mechanisms of P. putida GS1 were investigated using selected monoterpenoid-hypertolerant mutants. Most of the mutations were found in efflux pump promoter regions or associated transcription factors. Surprisingly, while for the tested monoterpenoid alcohols, ketone, and ether high efflux pump expression increased monoterpenoid tolerance, it reduced the tolerance against geranic acid. However, an increase of geranic acid tolerance could be gained by a mutation in an efflux pump component. It was also found that increased monoterpenoid tolerance can counteract efficient biotransformation ability, indicating the need for a fine-tuned and knowledge-based tolerance improvement for production strain development.Key points• Altered monoterpenoid tolerance mainly related to altered activity of efflux pumps.• Increased tolerance to geranic acid surprisingly caused by decreased export activity. • Reduction of export activity can be beneficial for biotechnological conversions.

TL;DR: In this article, the development of a new electrochemical process for the absorption of NOx from industrial waste gases is described, which is performed by an indirect outer cell process using dithionite as the redox mediator and Fe(II)EDTA as the complexing agent.
Abstract: The development of a new electrochemical process for the absorption of NOx from industrial waste gases is described. Conversion of NO was performed by an indirect outer cell process using dithionite as the redox mediator and Fe(II)EDTA as the complexing agent. The absorption process, involving complex formation with Fe(II)EDTA in the absence and presence of dithionite, was investigated using a packed bubble column. In semibatch experiments the dependence of different system parameters on the degree of NO conversion was studied: concentration of dithionite and Fe(II)EDTA, gas flow rate, oxygen content, and temperature. The reaction products in the gas phase and in the liquid phase were analyzed using gas chromatography and ion chromatography, respectively. This analysis proved that, instead of N2 or N2O, ammonia and amidosulfonic acid are the main reaction products in the solution. The kinetics and the conditions for the regeneration of dithionite by electrochemical reduction of sulfite were studied on RDE and by experiments in a divided cell. For the dithionite production a current efficiency of about 80% was found in 0.2 m Na2SO4 at pH 5.6. By combining the chemical NO absorption in a gas/liquid contactor with the electrochemical regeneration of dithionite in a divided plate and frame cell a degree of NO conversion better than 90% under continuous operation can be obtained.

TL;DR: In this article, the halogen effect was used to improve the oxidation resistance of a technical TiAl alloy called γ-MET [Ti-46.5Al-4(Cr, Nb, Ta, B)] with and without implantation.
Abstract: Intermetallic alloys based on titanium aluminides, especially γ-TiAl (Ti-50at.%Al), are of great attraction for structural high temperature applications e.g. in aero engines because of their low specific weight (about 4g/cm3) and their good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. However, the use of TiAl alloys is still limited to a temperature of approximately 750°C due to their poor oxidation resistance at higher temperatures. The oxidation behaviour of TiAl alloys has to be improved before these alloys can be used at temperatures of 800°C and above. The improvement of the oxidation resistance of γ-TiAl can be achieved by small amounts of halogens F, Cl, Br and I (so called halogen effect). The halogens can be incorporated in several ways e.g. by ion implantation. In this paper results of a technical TiAl alloy called γ-MET [Ti-46.5Al-4(Cr, Nb, Ta, B)] with and without implantation are presented.
