TL;DR: A novel microbial production system has been established for a fruit flavour compound by introducing a polycistronic construct encoding a fungal carotenoid pathway and an expression cassette encoding a plant dioxygenase.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that inorganic photocatalysts such as gold–titanium dioxide efficiently provide H2O2 through the methanol‐driven reductive activation of ambient oxygen in amounts that ensure that the enzyme remains highly active and stable.
Abstract: Selective oxyfunctionalisation of inert C-H bonds under mild conditions can be achieved using peroxygenases. This approach, however, is impaired by the poor robustness of these enzymes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as the stoichiometric oxidant. Here, we demonstrate that inorganic photocatalysts such as gold-titanium dioxide efficiently provide H2O2 from methanol-driven reductive activation of ambient oxygen in suitable amounts to ensure high reactivity and robustness of the enzyme. Using this approach stereoselective hydroxylation of ethyl benzene to (R)-1-phenyl ethanol in high enantioselectivity (>98% ee) and excellent turnover numbers of the biocatalyst (>71.000) was achieved.

TL;DR: The risk management of emerging compounds and pathogens in the water cycle (RiSKWa) project as mentioned in this paper is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Abstract: The increasing concentrations and diversity of trace pollutants and pathogens in the water cycle are a challenge with regard to their classification, assessment and elimination. As a result the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) initiated the funding measure “Risk Management of Emerging Compounds and Pathogens in the Water Cycle (RiSKWa)“. The aim of the programme is to develop innovative technologies and concepts for the risk management of these compounds towards a preventive environmental and health protection based on an application-oriented approach. Having started between October 2011 and January 2012, 12 joint research projects with more than 90 actors from science, industry, society and authorities are working on “Risk characterisation and management“, “Technologies for emission and immission management” and “Measures for communication and education” during the next 3 years.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the decoy molecule approach enables conversion of a broad range of carboxylic acids by filling up the vacant substrate access channel of the photodecarboxylase.
Abstract: A recently discovered photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A ( CvFAP) bears the promise for the efficient and selective synthesis of hydrocarbons from carboxylic acids. CvFAP, however, exhibits a clear preference for long-chain fatty acids thereby limiting its broad applicability. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the decoy molecule approach enables conversion of a broad range of carboxylic acids by filling up the vacant substrate access channel of the photodecarboxylase. These results not only demonstrate a practical application of a unique, photoactivated enzyme but also pave the way to selective production of short-chain alkanes from waste carboxylic acids under mild reaction conditions.
