Use of sonomicrometry demonstrates the link between prey capture kinematics and suction pressure in largemouth bass.

Abstract: Suction feeding in fishes is the result of a highly coordinated explosive expansion of the buccal cavity that results in a rapid drop in pressure. Prey are drawn into the mouth by a flow of water that is generated by this expansion. At a gross level it is clear that the expansion of the buccal cavity is responsible for the drop in pressure. However, attempts using high-speed video recordings to demonstrate a tight link between prey capture kinematics and suction pressure have met with limited success. In a study with largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, we adopted a new technique for studying kinematics, sonomicrometry, to transduce the movement of skeletal elements of the head during feeding, and synchronized pressure recordings at a sampling rate of 500 Hz. From the positional relationships of six piezoelectric crystals we monitored the internal movements of the buccal cavity and mouth in both mid-sagittal and transverse planes. We found that peak subambient pressure was reached very early in the kinematic expansion of the buccal cavity, occurring at the time when the rate of percentage change in buccal volume was at its peak. Using multiple regression analyses we were consistently able to account for over 90%, and in the best model 99%, of the variation in buccal pressure among strikes using kinematic variables. Sonomicrometry shows great promise as a method for documenting movements of biological structures that are not clearly visible in the external view provided by film and video recordings.

A longitudinal study of the effects of life status changes on changes in consumer preferences

Abstract: Marketers and consumer researchers have maintained a long-standing interest in understanding continuities and changes in consumer preferences. The present research attempts to provide explanations for stability and changes in consumption patterns by presenting a theoretical framework according to which the results of previous studies may be recast and further research advanced. The authors develop hypotheses and test them with retrospective and longitudinal data, using alternate measures of key variables. The authors suggest implications of the study findings for marketers and theory development, and they provide directions for future research.

Whither the Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome

Abstract: After 4 years of debate, a decision has been made. The attenuated psychosis syndrome (APS) will not be a coded diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Formerly known as the psychosis risk syndrome, the proposed diagnosis was based on criteria developed in the mid-1990s that were informed by a comprehensive review of retrospective studies on the prodromal phase of nonaffective psychosis.

Dietary Recommendations for Adults With Psoriasis or Psoriatic Arthritis From the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation: A Systematic Review.

Abstract: Importance Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease and has significant associated morbidity and effect on quality of life. It is important to determine whether dietary interventions help reduce disease severity in patients with psoriatic diseases. Objective To make evidence-based dietary recommendations for adults with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis from the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation. Evidence Review We used literature from prior systematic reviews as well as additional primary literature from the MEDLINE database from January 1, 2014, to August 31, 2017, that evaluated the impact of diet on psoriasis. We included observational and interventional studies of patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for observational studies and the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for interventional studies. We made evidence-based dietary recommendations, which were voted on by the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board. Findings We identified 55 studies meeting the inclusion criteria for this review. These studies represent 77 557 unique participants of which 4534 have psoriasis. Based on the literature, we strongly recommend dietary weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet in overweight and obese patients with psoriasis. We weakly recommend a gluten-free diet only in patients who test positive for serologic markers of gluten sensitivity. Based on low-quality data, select foods, nutrients, and dietary patterns may affect psoriasis. For patients with psoriatic arthritis, we weakly recommend vitamin D supplementation and dietary weight reduction with a hypocaloric diet in overweight and obese patients. Dietary interventions should always be used in conjunction with standard medical therapies for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Conclusions and Relevance Adults with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis can supplement their standard medical therapies with dietary interventions to reduce disease severity. These dietary recommendations from the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board will help guide clinicians regarding the utility of dietary interventions in adults with psoriatic diseases.
