TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived a policy which is maximin for the classical disposal model with unknown price distribution which is new worse than used in expectation, and showed that the gain in using the maximin policy relative to the option of selling right away is convex decreasing in the continuation cost to mean price ratio.
Abstract: For the classical disposal model for selling an asset with unknown price distribution which is NWUE (new worse than used in expectation) with a given finite mean price, this note derives a policy which is maximin. The gain in using the maximin policy relative to the option of selling right away is convex decreasing in the continuation cost to mean price ratio. The relevant results of Derman, Lieberman and Ross also follow as a consequence of our analysis. Our theorem provides a practical justification of their main result on the cutoff bid for the disposal model subject to NWUE pricing.

19 Mar 2008TL;DR: A "chronon" based conceptual (relational) model, which works on a tuple timestamping paradigm, where the time attribute is treated in similar fashion as any other attribute and is available to the user for inclusion in SQL statements, making the model easy to understand and use.
Abstract: Among various models like TSQL2, XML and SQL:2003 for temporal databases, TSQL2 is perhaps the most comprehensive one and introduces new constructs for temporal query support. However, these constructs mask the user from the underlying conceptual model and essentially provides a "black box" flavour. Further, the temporal attributes are not directly accessible. In this paper, we propose a "chronon" based conceptual (relational) model, which works on a tuple timestamping paradigm. Here, the time attribute is treated in similar fashion as any other attribute and is available to the user for inclusion in SQL statements, making the model easy to understand and use. A corresponding efficient physical model based on the attribute versioning format akin to XML/SQL:2003 has also been proposed and the mapping between the proposed conceptual and physical models has been described. We evaluate the model by comparing with TSQL2 and SQL:2003.

TL;DR: The authors analyzes contradictions between India's internationally espoused negotiating positions and its domestic policy goals and argues that India's core focus has been to preserve status quo in the domestic food markets, driven by the political need to provide food-based consumption subsidies and manage an assured price and supply protection to its vulnerable consumers.
Abstract: India has actively tried to shape the WTO agricultural negotiations by submitting detailed proposals, building coalitions, and even taking hard stands (veto) at critical junctures. However, this aggressive posturing presents a sharp contrast with India's domestic agricultural space, where the situation highlights policy neglect, manifesting in agrarian distress and farmer suicides. This paper analyzes contradictions between India's internationally espoused negotiating positions and its domestic policy goals. It argues that India's core focus has been to preserve status quo in the domestic food markets, driven by the political need to provide food-based consumption subsidies and manage an assured price and supply protection to its vulnerable consumers. As a result, India's interests are divergent from most of its developing country coalition partners in the G-20 as well as the G-33 groups. Our discussion has significant implications for both the domestic policy, as well as the sustainability of India's strategy in global agricultural trade negotiations.

TL;DR: An adaptive media access control (MAC) protocol that periodically updates neighboring node information in a distributed network, such as a wireless ad hoc network, and uses smart antennas to achieve simultaneous communications by directionality control to neighboring nodes other than those currently communicating is proposed.
Abstract: A smart antenna can increase the number of simultaneous transmissions by reducing interference and improving the throughput performance. In this paper, we propose an adaptive media access control (MAC) protocol that periodically updates neighboring node information in a distributed network, such as a wireless ad hoc network, and uses smart antennas to achieve simultaneous communications by directionality control to neighboring nodes other than those currently communicating. We also verify that the overhead for updating the neighboring node information can be reduced to 15% or less than in conventional schemes and the number of simultaneous communications can be 2 to 3.5 times higher than when using omnidirectional antennas. Furthermore, we considered the effects of the overhead accompanying neighboring node updates, node density, beam width, and moving speed on the communication efficiency when using the proposed MAC protocol. The communication efficiency was improved by controlling the transmission power to shorten the transmission range, lower the node density, and widen the beam width more than by extending the transmission range and increasing the node density. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
