01 Jan 2016TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a detailed look at the state of the informal sector in the larger metropolitan region of Kolkata since 1991 and provide a means to understand the impact of economic liberalization on the local economies of the various smaller towns/municipalities that constitute the KMA.
Abstract: No plan for local economic development within the larger metropolitan region of Kolkata can realistically succeed unless based on an understanding of the informal sector and taking account of it in subsequent local development strategy. The objective of this chapter is to provide a detailed look at the state of the informal sector in the larger metropolitan region of Kolkata since 1991. This information would provide a means to understand the impact of economic liberalization on the local economies of the various smaller towns/municipalities that constitute the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) and to suggest ways to incorporate the informal sector in the growth process. The study is based on aggregate-level secondary data that present trends in growth and structure of the informal sector in the KMA. The study also considers informal manufacturing activities and informal service activities, and highlights ways to include the informal sector in the local economic development process.

01 Jan 2013TL;DR: A mathematical model is developed to depict the energy consumption when performing a security-enhanced computation in the cloud and demonstrates the potential energy saving in the event of user or organization specified policy for secure computing and data storage in the Cloud.
Abstract: Computation offloading to the Cloud for energy efficiency in portable devices is an emerging area of research triggered by the widespread use and acceptance of smart phones. A number of architectures have already been proposed in this context. However, security issues in the cloud still remain a concern that can play an important role in deciding whether offloading really helps to achieve energy efficiency in mobile phones. Our framework is based on a layered data approach together with user selected security policies. This motivated us to develop a mathematical model to depict the energy consumption when performing a security-enhanced computation in the cloud. The model demonstrates the potential energy saving in the event of user or organization specified policy for secure computing and data storage in the Cloud.

TL;DR: This work focuses on a particular customer segment of IaaS – online platform providers (OPP), which experience fluctuations in the number of users of their platforms, which impacts advertising revenues and model these fluctuations and their impact on the revenue of the platform providers to design an optimal pricing plan.
Abstract: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is expected to grow at a rapid pace in the next few years. This is primarily because of the flexibility that it offers satisfying variable demand in computing power without any fixed investments in computing capacity. Our work focuses on a particular customer segment of IaaS – online platform providers (OPP). These businesses experience fluctuations in the number of users of their platforms, which impacts advertising revenues. Therefore, it is necessary for these businesses to support any sudden surge in demand without excessive upfront investments in computing infrastructure. IaaS offers an attractive option for such businesses. Pricing of IaaS for OPP is trickier as IaaS providers must consider the fluctuations in the number of users of such platforms while designing a plan. We model these fluctuations and their impact on the revenue of the platform providers to design an optimal pricing plan.
