TL;DR: In this article, a comparison between the reference values of crop evapotraspiration acquired through the lysimeter and the FAO-modified Penman-Monteith, Solar Radiation, Makkink, Linacre, Jensen-Haise, Hargreaves-Samani, PAN "Class A" and modified SEEI Atmometer methods was made.
Abstract: The aim of this research paper was to make a comparison between the reference values of crop evapotraspiration acquired through the lysimeter and the FAO-modified Penman-Monteith, Solar Radiation, Makkink, Linacre, Jensen-Haise, Hargreaves-Samani, PAN "Class A"and modified SEEI Atmometer methods. Data was obtained from the meteorological station at PESAGRO-Rio, located at Campos dos Goytacazes in the State of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Results have shown that for the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, the methods tend to be well adjusted to the reference values of the crop evapotranspiration as to those obtained through the lysimeter. Nonetheless, good adjustments were obtained for intervals longer than seven-day periods when using the indirect and evaporimeter methods.

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic review was conducted to relate food insecurity, detected using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), with anthropometric, dietary and social indicators.
Abstract: The scope of this systematic review was to relate food insecurity, detected using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), with anthropometric, dietary and social indicators. The search was conducted in electronic databases (ScieLO, LILACS, MEDLINE), with a selection of studies by titles and abstracts, and later full reading. Studies identified in bibliographic references were included. Of the 215 reviewed, 15 fulfilled inclusion criteria (association between insecurity and anthropometric, dietary or social indicators, detected by the EBIA), whereby three had more than one variable of interest. A relationship was observed between food insecurity and height/age and weight/age of child indices, as well as obesity in women. Lower consumption of regulating, tissue-building food products and iron, and higher carbohydrate intake are associated with food insecurity. There was a relationship between social indicators, such as lower income and education, lack of employment and basic sanitation. The EBIA was associated in some studies with nutritional and social indicators, but should be used in conjunction with other tools in order to cover the multiple dimensions of food and nutrition security.

TL;DR: The growth of Digitaria insularis was evaluated under greenhouse conditions, suggesting the possibility of good cultural control by crops that have fast initial growth and large leaf area, covering the soil rapidly.
Abstract: Digitaria insularis is a perennial species that reproduces from seeds and rhizomes, being difficult to control after its first flowering. In order to define integrated management techniques to this species, its growth was evaluated under greenhouse conditions, using a pot filled with 0.003 m3 of soil. Height, leaf area and dry matter evaluations were carried out between 14 and 112 days after emergence (DAE), every 7 days, at 15 different times. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design, with four replications. The plant was fragmented into root+rhizome, stem and leaf. After drying at 70 oC, leaf area and dry matter were determined. Highest leaf area and dry matter values were verified at 98 and 105 DAE, respectively. Leaves showed higher participation in dry matter total accumulation followed by roots+rhizome, up to 105 DAE. Dry matter accumulation of Digitaria insularis slowed down up to 45 DAE, increasing due to rhizome formation. Relative growth rate values decreased along time due to higher photo assimilate accumulation. Digitaria insularis showed slow growth up to 45 DAE, increasing from 45 to 105 DAE, suggesting the possibility of good cultural control by crops that have fast initial growth and large leaf area, covering the soil rapidly.

TL;DR: Molecular characterization revealed the absence of genes involved in autotrophic nitrification in the genome of the two isolates and the presence of genesinvolved in anaerobic denitrification only in P. balearica UFV3, suggesting the involvement of other genes in the HN/AD process.

TL;DR: Each breed should be considered as a separate management and conservation unit, and special care should be taken with Rabo Largo, Morada Nova and Somali breeds, represented by small herds in Brazil.
Abstract: The objectives of this work were to investigate the genetic structure of the Brazilian hair sheep breeds and to determine the origin of the Santa Ines breed. Molecular similarity was determined using Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA - Polymerase Chain Reaction markers in 238 individuals from five naturalized sheep breeds: Santa Ines (48 animals), Rabo Largo (48), Somali (48), Morada Nova (48) and Bergamasca (46), collected in Goias, Sergipe, Bahia, and Ceara States as well as in the Federal District. Fifty-four loci were selected from 19 primers, after a pilot test using 140 primers. Qualitative analyses indicate diagnostic markers for all breeds. All breeds were significantly different from each other. Interbreed differences were explained by 14.92% of the total variation. Santa Ines clustered with Bergamasca (97% bootstrap) and with Rabo Largo, composing the third member of the group (81% bootstrap) while Morada Nova and Somali breeds clustered separately. Each breed should be considered as a separate management and conservation unit, and special care should be taken with Rabo Largo, Morada Nova and Somali breeds, represented by small herds in Brazil.
