Abstract: The production of biosurfactant by Bacillus subtilis LSFM-05 was carried out using raw glycerol, obtained from a vegetable oil biodiesel plant in Brazil, as the sole carbon source. Production of the biosurfactant was carried out in a 15-L bench-top fermentor and the surfactant was obtained from the foam produced. The crude surfactant was purified by silica gel column chromatography with a yield of 230 mg of the purified biosurfactant per liter of foam. TLC, IR spectroscopy, 1 H and 13 C NMR and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (ESI-FTMS) were used to characterize the purified surfactant. The isolated surfactant was identified as a surfactin lipopeptide. MS/MS data identified the amino acid sequence as GluOMe-Leu-Leu-Asp-Val-Leu-Leu and showed that the fatty acid moiety contained 14 carbons in iso , anteiso or normal configurations. The critical micelle concentration of the C 14 /Leu 7 surfactin was 70 μM, with emulsification efficiency after 24 h ( E 24 ) of 67.6% against crude oil. Raw glycerol represents an abundant and renewable carbon source and provides an opportunity for reducing the cost of biosurfactant production and may add value to biodiesel production by creating new commercial applications for this by-product.

Abstract: Many polyphenolics contained in mango have shown anticancer activity. The objective of this study was to compare the anticancer properties of polyphenolic extracts from several mango varieties (Francis, Kent, Ataulfo, Tommy Atkins, and Haden) in cancer cell lines, including Molt-4 leukemia, A-549 lung, MDA-MB-231 breast, LnCap prostate, and SW-480 colon cancer cells and the noncancer colon cell line CCD-18Co. Cell lines were incubated with Ataulfo and Haden extracts, selected on the basis of their superior antioxidant capacity compared to the other varieties, where SW-480 and MOLT-4 were statistically equally most sensitive to both cultivars followed by MDA-MB-231, A-549, and LnCap in order of decreasing efficacy as determined by cell counting. The efficacy of extracts from all mango varieties in the inhibition of cell growth was tested in SW-480 colon carcinoma cells, where Ataulfo and Haden demonstrated superior efficacy, followed by Kent, Francis, and Tommy Atkins. Abstract: Climate change and its effects on the hydrologic regime of the Amazon basin can impact biogeochemical processes, transportation, flood vulnerability, fisheries and hydropower generation. We examined projections of climate change on discharge and inundation extent in the Amazon basin using the regional hydrological model MGB-IPH with 1-dimensional river hydraulic and water storage simulation in floodplains. Future projections (2070–2099) were obtained from five GCMs from IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report CMIP5. Climate projections have uncertainty and results from different climate models did not agree in total Amazon flooded area or discharge anomalies along the main stem river. Overall, model runs agree better with wetter (drier) conditions over western (eastern) Amazon. Results indicate that increased mean and maximum river discharge for large rivers draining the Andes in the northwest contributes to increased mean and maximum discharge and inundation extent over Peruvian floodplains and Solimoes River (annual mean-max: +9 % - +18.3 %) in western Amazonia. Decreased river discharges (mostly dry season) are projected for eastern basins, and decreased inundation extent at low water (annual min) in the central (−15.9 %) and lower Amazon (−4.4 %).
