TLDR
The recent discovery of GRB afterglow has demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle as discussed by the authors, and the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.

High energy particles from γ-ray bursts

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the production of GRB fireballs of γ-rays, high-energy cosmic-rays and neutrinos is discussed in the light of recent GRB and ultra-high energy cosmic-ray observations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Testing the Predictions of the Universal Structured GRB Jet Model

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the current sample of GRBs with known redshift and estimated viewing angle does not agree with the predictions of the universal structured jet (USJ) model.

The diverse broadband light curves of swift gamma-ray bursts reproduced with the cannonball model

TL;DR: In this paper, two radiation mechanisms, inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and synchrotron radiation (SR), suffice within the CB model of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) and X-ray flashes (XRFs) to provide a very simple and accurate description of their observed prompt emission and afterglows (AGs).

The Impact of Space Experiments on Our Knowledge of the Physics of the Universe

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the last steps of the investigation born with the advent of space experiments, to note upon the most important results and open problems still existing, and to comment upon the perspectives we can reasonably expect.
Journal ArticleDOI

An observational limit on the earliest gamma-ray bursts

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors predicted the redshift of the first observable gamma-ray burst (GRB) and calculated the GRB rate redshift distribution of the Population III stars at very early times (z = 20-60).

Gamma-ray bursts from stellar mass accretion disks around black holes

TL;DR: In this paper, a cosmological model for gamma-ray bursts is explored in which the radiation is produced as a broadly beamed pair fireball along the rotation axis of an accreting black hole.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spectra and light curves of gamma-ray burst afterglows

TL;DR: In this paper, the broadband spectrum and corresponding light curve of synchrotron radiation from a power-law distribution of electrons in an expanding relativistic shock were calculated for the gamma-ray burst afterglow.

Nucleosynthesis, neutrino bursts and gamma-rays from coalescing neutron stars

TL;DR: In this paper, it was pointed out that neutron-star collisions should synthesize neutron-rich heavy elements, thought to be formed by rapid neutron capture (the r-process), and these collisions should produce neutrino bursts and resultant bursts of gamma rays; the latter should comprise a subclass of observable gamma-ray bursts.
