TLDR
The recent discovery of GRB afterglow has demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle as discussed by the authors, and the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.

Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays: the state of the art before the auger observatory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the important progress made in recent years towards understanding the experimental data on cosmic rays with energies ≳ 1019 eV and discuss the potential of future cosmic ray experiments for the discovery of tiny black holes that should be produced in the earth's atmosphere if TeV-scale gravity is realized in Nature.

The Weibel instability in relativistic plasmas - II. Nonlinear theory and stabilization mechanism

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discussed the onset of the nonlinear stage of the electromagnetic Weibel instability in a relativistic plasma, and the process of current coalescence that follows this instability.

Towards a complete theory of Gamma Ray Bursts

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the "cannonball" (CB) model does not explain the ejection of highly relativistic jetted gamma ray burst (GRB) in core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions.

High-Energy Cosmic Rays from Gamma-Ray Burst Sources: A Stronger Case

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the constraints that UHECR sources must satisfy in order to allow proton acceleration to greater than 1020 eV are similar to those inferred for GRB sources from γ-ray observations.

Gamma-ray bursts from stellar mass accretion disks around black holes

TL;DR: In this paper, a cosmological model for gamma-ray bursts is explored in which the radiation is produced as a broadly beamed pair fireball along the rotation axis of an accreting black hole.

Spectra and light curves of gamma-ray burst afterglows

TL;DR: In this paper, the broadband spectrum and corresponding light curve of synchrotron radiation from a power-law distribution of electrons in an expanding relativistic shock were calculated for the gamma-ray burst afterglow.

Nucleosynthesis, neutrino bursts and gamma-rays from coalescing neutron stars

TL;DR: In this paper, it was pointed out that neutron-star collisions should synthesize neutron-rich heavy elements, thought to be formed by rapid neutron capture (the r-process), and these collisions should produce neutrino bursts and resultant bursts of gamma rays; the latter should comprise a subclass of observable gamma-ray bursts.
