Gamma-ray bursts – a puzzle being resolved ☆

TLDR
The recent discovery of GRB afterglow has demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle as discussed by the authors, and the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.About:

On the optical and X-ray afterglows of gamma ray bursts
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors severely criticize the consuetudinary analysis of the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the conical-ejection fireball scenarios, and argue that, instead, recent observations imply that the long-duration GRBs and their after glows are produced by highly relativistic jets of cannonballs (CBs) emitted in supernova explosions.

TL;DR: In this article, a general framework for off-axis GRB jet afterglow emission, comparing analytic and numerical approaches, and showing their general predictions for short-hard GRBs that accompany binary neutron-star (NS-NS) mergers is presented.

Nucleosynthesis, neutrino bursts and gamma-rays from coalescing neutron stars

TL;DR: In this paper, it was pointed out that neutron-star collisions should synthesize neutron-rich heavy elements, thought to be formed by rapid neutron capture (the r-process), and these collisions should produce neutrino bursts and resultant bursts of gamma rays; the latter should comprise a subclass of observable gamma-ray bursts.
