TLDR
The recent discovery of GRB afterglow has demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle as discussed by the authors, and the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.

Conical Fireballs, Cannonballs, And Jet-Breaks In The Afterglows Of Gamma Ray Bursts

TL;DR: In this article, the "jet-break" in the X-ray afterglow of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) appears to be correlated with other properties, such as the gamma ray burst's afterglows and the prompt gamma ray emission, but the correlations are at odds with those predicted by the conical fireball model of GRBs.

Predicting the future from observable sequences of events in astrophysics I. Maximum Likelihood Estimation for a fixed number of parameters

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used analytical and numerical methods to predict future predictions in astrophysics that can be gathered from a sequence of observed events, for exam- ple for -ray bursts.

Matching Condition in γ–γ Annihilation Absorption

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors obtained a matching condition for the energies of two interacting photons, which ensures the attainment of the maximum annihilation probability, which is helpful to obtain a better understanding for the absorption behaviour in the γ-γ annihilation process, and this predicts some possible line-like absorption structures in the emergent γray continuous spectra.

Simulating astrophysical phenomena: challenges and achievements

TL;DR: Simulation is an indispensable and expedient tool for understanding many astrophysical phenomena and it is illustrated that simulation can provide the link between observations and theoretical models of astrophysical phenomenon.

A detailed analysis of γ-γ annihilation absorption in γ-ray astronomy

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived a simplified direction-averaged expression for the annihilation cross section σ (ω,ω′) for a general isotropic ambient radiation field and obtained direction-aversaged threshold condition of annihilation and the match condition, that have to be satisfied by the energies of two interacting photons, h ω and hω′, to ensure the occurrence of annihilation.

Gamma-ray bursts from stellar mass accretion disks around black holes

TL;DR: In this paper, a cosmological model for gamma-ray bursts is explored in which the radiation is produced as a broadly beamed pair fireball along the rotation axis of an accreting black hole.

Spectra and light curves of gamma-ray burst afterglows

TL;DR: In this paper, the broadband spectrum and corresponding light curve of synchrotron radiation from a power-law distribution of electrons in an expanding relativistic shock were calculated for the gamma-ray burst afterglow.

Nucleosynthesis, neutrino bursts and gamma-rays from coalescing neutron stars

TL;DR: In this paper, it was pointed out that neutron-star collisions should synthesize neutron-rich heavy elements, thought to be formed by rapid neutron capture (the r-process), and these collisions should produce neutrino bursts and resultant bursts of gamma rays; the latter should comprise a subclass of observable gamma-ray bursts.
