In this paper, the authors provide evidence that intelligence has pervasive utility in work settings because it is essentially the ability to deal with cognitive complexity, in particular, with complex information processing, and the more complex a work task, the greater the advantages that higher g confers in performing it well.

Word Counts in Response to Cognitively Demanding Essay Prompts as Reflections of General Cognitive Ability and Broad Cognitive Abilities

TL;DR: Landers et al. as discussed by the authors examined the relationship between general cognitive ability (GCA) and word count categories as well as the relationships between broad cognitive abilities and word counts categories, and found that GCA and verbal ability related to various LIWC word counts the strongest out of the abilities measured, yielding small to medium effect sizes in both positive and negative directions.
