Do We Really Become Smarter When Our Fluid-Intelligence Test Scores Improve?

TL;DR: Novel evidence is presented that the test score gains used to measure the efficacy of cognitive training may reflect strategy refinement instead of intelligence gains, and established theories of skill acquisition suggest that procedural knowledge tacitly acquired during training can later be utilized at posttest.

Differential Ability Scales – Second Edition (Neuro)psychological Predictors of Math Performance for Typical Children and Children with Math Disabilities

TL;DR: In this article, the ability-achievement discrepancy method for specific learning disability (SLD) determination led to alternative research-based methods, such as failure to respond to intervention, and neither of these regulatory methods address the statutory SLD definition, which explicitly includes a deficit in basic psychological processes.

Mind the gap... in intelligence: re-examining the relationship between inequality and health.

TL;DR: The macro-level analyses show that income inequality and economic development have no effect on life expectancy at birth, infant mortality and age-specific mortality net of average intelligence quotient (IQ) in 126 countries, while the micro level data show that, while both income and intelligence have independent positive effects on self-reported health, intelligence has a stronger effect than income.

Psychological and physical health at age 70 in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936: links with early life IQ, SES, and current cognitive function and neighborhood environment.

TL;DR: The effects of early-life IQ on mental and physical health outcomes at age 70, in the context of effects of SES, found that high age-11 IQ tended to buffer effects of adverse environments on physical and mental problems in old age.

Association of structural global brain network properties with intelligence in normal aging

TL;DR: First evidence of an association between global structural brain network properties and general intelligence in advanced elderly is provided, suggesting that general intelligence and global properties of structural brain networks may not be generally associated in cognitively healthy elderly.
