TL;DR: The results suggest that some asthma susceptibility loci are robust to differences in ancestry when sufficiently large samples sizes are investigated, and that ancestry-specific associations also contribute to the complex genetic architecture of asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: A genome-wide association scan for sequence variants affecting eosinophil counts in blood of 9,392 Icelanders found that a nonsynonymous SNP at 12q24, in SH2B3, associated significantly with myocardial infarction in six different populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Variation in CHI3L1 on Serum YKL-40 Level, Risk of Asthma, and Lung Function
Carole Ober,Zheng Tan,Ying Sun,Jennifer D. Possick,Lin Pan,Raluca Nicolae,Sadie Radford,Rodney Parry,Andrea Heinzmann,Klaus A. Deichmann,Lucille A. Lester,James E. Gern,Robert F. Lemanske,Dan L. Nicolae,Jack A. Elias,Geoffrey L. Chupp +15 more
TL;DR: CHI3L1 is a susceptibility gene for asthma, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and reduced lung function, and elevated circulating YKL-40 levels are a biomarker for asthma and decline in lung function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic variants of IL-13 signalling and human asthma and atopy
Andrea Heinzmann,X. Q. Mao,Mina Akaiwa,R. T. Kreomer,Peisong Gao,Koichi Ohshima,R. Umeshita,R. Umeshita,Yoshito Abe,Sandra Braun,Tetsuji Yamashita,Mark H. Roberts,Rie Sugimoto,Kazuhiko Arima,Yojiro Arinobu,Bin Yu,S. Kruse,Tadao Enomoto,Y. Dake,M. Kawai,S. Shimazu,S. Sasaki,Chaker N. Adra,M. Kitaichi,Hiroshi Inoue,Kohei Yamauchi,Nobukazu Tomichi,Fumihiko Kurimoto,Naotaka Hamasaki,Julian M. Hopkin,Kenji Izuhara,T. Shirakawa,Klaus A. Deichmann +32 more
TL;DR: Detailed molecular modelling analyses indicate that residue 110 of IL-13, the site of the charge-modifying variants Arg and Gln, is important in the internal constitution of the ligand and crucial in ligand-receptor interaction, likely to be important promoters of human asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atopy and asthma: genetic variants of IL-4 and IL-13 signalling
TL;DR: Genetic variants of IL-4/IL-13 signalling are discussed, and whether they promote asthma or atopy among different ethnic groups are discussed.
