Journal ArticleDOI
Critical missing data on erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in CKD: first beat placebo.
TL;DR: Discussion by Dr Pfeffer on the conduct of these trials to be relevant to trials of other therapies in nephrology, such as those for phosphorus binding agents, for example the DCOR (Dialysis Clinical Outcomes Revisited) study presented elsewhere in this issue of AJKD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acute effects of withdrawal of cardiac resynchronization therapy on left and right ventricular function, dyssynchrony, and contractile function in patients with New York Heart Association functional class I/II heart failure: MADIT-CRT.
Dorit Knappe,Anne-Catherine Pouleur,Amil M. Shah,Mikhail Bourgoun,Mary W. Brown,Elyse Foster,Marc A. Pfeffer,Arthur J. Moss,Scott D. Solomon +8 more
TL;DR: Despite substantial LV reverse remodeling with CRT, interruption of long-term CRT after 12 months resulted in an acute worsening of LV size and function, LA volumes, and right ventricular function, with concomitant worsening of ventricular synchrony despite minimal change to the observed improvement in LV strain measures of contractile function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Site selection for heart failure clinical trials in the USA
Matthew E. Harinstein,Javed Butler,Stephen J. Greene,Gregg C. Fonarow,Norman Stockbridge,Christopher M. O'Connor,Marc A. Pfeffer,Mandeep R. Mehra,Scott D. Solomon,Clyde W. Yancy,Mona Fiuzat,Robert J. Mentz,Sean P. Collins,John J.V. McMurray,Muthiah Vaduganathan,Preston Dunnmon,Giuseppe M.C. Rosano,Wilfried Dinh,Frank Misselwitz,Robert O. Bonow,Mihai Gheorghiade +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify barriers to successful hospitalized heart failure clinical trial participation in the USA and suggest possible solutions, including a lack of incentive for investigators and institutions, the relative value unit-based compensation system, poor institutional framework for identification of appropriate patients, and increasing liability to conduct trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pulse pressure is not an independent predictor of outcome in type 2 diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease and anemia--the Trial to Reduce Cardiovascular Events with Aranesp Therapy (TREAT)
Simone Theilade,Brian Claggett,Tine W. Hansen,Hicham Skali,Eldrin F. Lewis,Scott D. Solomon,Hans-Henrik Parving,Hans-Henrik Parving,Marc A. Pfeffer,John J.V. McMurray,Peter Rossing,Peter Rossing,Peter Rossing +12 more
TL;DR: In patients with type 2 diabetes, CKD and anemia, PP did not independently predict cardiovascular events or ESRD, and may reflect confounding by aggressive antihypertensive treatment, or PP may be too rough a risk marker in these high-risk patients.
Journal Article
Aortic Diameter, Wall Stiffness, and Wave Reflection in Systolic Hypertension. Commentary
Ramachandran S. Vasan,Gary F. Mitchell,Paul R. Conlin,Mark E. Dunlap,Yves Lacourcière,J. Malcolm O. Arnold,Richard I. Ogilvie,Joel M. Neutel,Joseph L. Izzo,Marc A. Pfeffer +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured pulsatile hemodynamics and proximal aortic diameter directly using tonometry, ultrasound imaging, and Doppler in 167 individuals with systolic hypertension.
