TL;DR: Data show that cattle have undergone a rapid recent decrease in effective population size from a very large ancestral population, possibly due to bottlenecks associated with domestication, selection, and breed formation.

TL;DR: A precipitous drop in costs and increase in sequencing efficiency is anticipated, with concomitant development of improved annotation technology, and it is proposed to create a collection of tissue and DNA specimens for 10,000 vertebrate species specifically designated for whole-genome sequencing in the very near future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Noninvasive genetic tracking of the endangered Pyrenean brown bear population.
Pierre Taberlet,J.-J. Camarra,S. Griffin,E. Uhrès,Olivier Hanotte,Lisette P. Waits,C. Dubois-Paganon,Terry Burke,Jean Bouvet +8 more
TL;DR: Comprehensive knowledge of endangered small populations of mammals can be obtained using noninvasive genetic sampling and it is suggested that managers consider population augmentation using only females to preserve the remaining Pyrenean gene pool and increase genetic diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI
African pastoralism: genetic imprints of origins and migrations.
Olivier Hanotte,Daniel G. Bradley,Joel W. Ochieng,Yasmin Verjee,Emmeline W. Hill,J. Edward O. Rege +5 more
TL;DR: The genetic signatures of its origins, secondary movements, and differentiation through the study of 15 microsatellite loci in 50 indigenous cattle breeds spanning the present cattle distribution in Africa reveal a major entry point through the Horn and the East Coast of Africa and two modes of introgression into the continent.
