Journal ArticleDOI
Glucocorticosteroids: current and future directions
TL;DR: Several molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid resistance have now been identified which involve post‐translational modifications of GR and alternative anti‐inflammatory treatments are being investigated as well as drugs that may reverse the molecular mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Theophylline restores histone deacetylase activity and steroid responses in COPD macrophages.
TL;DR: Theophylline induced a sixfold increase in HDAC activity in COPD AM lysates and significantly enhanced dexamethasone suppression of induced IL-8 release, an effect that was blocked by the HDAC inhibitor trichostatin A.
Journal ArticleDOI
Release and activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 by alveolar macrophages from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Richard Russell,Sarah V. Culpitt,Carmen DeMatos,Louise E. Donnelly,Michael Smith,John Wiggins,Peter J. Barnes +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that macrophage-derived MMP-9 and TIMP-1 from alveolar macrophages might be important in the development of COPD because these cells exhibit increased levels of elastolytic activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The costs of asthma
TL;DR: Current literature on the costs of asthma is reviewed to assess how effectively money is spent and, by estimating the proportion of the cost attributable to uncontrolled disease, will identify where financial savings might be made.
