TL;DR: The preparation of unprecedented eighteen-faceted BiOCl with {001} top facets and {102} and {112} oblique facets via a hydrothermal process is reported, which has highly enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution and hydroxyl radicals (. OH) production.
Abstract: Exposure of anisotropic crystal facets allows the directional transfer of photoexcited electrons (e- ) and holes (h+ ), for spatial charge separation. High-index facets with a high density of low-coordinated atoms always serve as reactive catalytic sites. However, preparation of multi-facets or high-index facets is highly challenging for layered bismuth-based photocatalysts. Herein, we report the preparation of unprecedented eighteen-faceted BiOCl with {001} top facets and {102} and {112} oblique facets via a hydrothermal process. Compared to the conventional BiOCl square plates with {001} top facets and {110} lateral facets, the eighteen-faceted BiOCl has highly enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 evolution and hydroxyl radicals (. OH) production. Theoretical calculations and photodeposition results disclose that the of eighteen-faceted BiOCl has a well-matched {001}/{102}/{112} ternary facet junction, which provides a cascade path for more efficient charge flow than the binary facet junction in BiOCl square plates.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that the Dirac cone and carrier linear dispersion is a very common feature in 2D carbon allotropes and can exist beyond the limitations of fundamental structure features of graphene.
Abstract: Using a structural search method in combination with first-principles calculations, we found lots of low energy 2D carbon allotropes and examined all possible Dirac points around their Fermi levels. Three amazing 2D Dirac carbon allotropes have been discovered, named as S-graphene, D-graphene and E-graphene. By analyzing the topology correlations among S-, T, net W graphene and graphene, we found that a general rule is valuable for constructing 2D carbon allotropes that are keen to possess Dirac cones in their electronic structures. Based on this rule, we have successfully designed many new 2D carbon allotropes possessing Dirac cones. Their energy order can be well described by an Ising-like model, and some allotropes are energetically more stable than those recently reported. The related electronic structures of these Dirac allotropes are anisotropy distinguished from those of graphene. Moreover, the fact that D- and E-graphene present Dirac cones suggests that sp hybridization or sp(3) hybridization could not suppress the emerging of Dirac features. Our results demonstrate that the Dirac cone and carrier linear dispersion is a very common feature in 2D carbon allotropes and can exist beyond the limitations of fundamental structure features of graphene.

TL;DR: It is reported that, by a careful controlling alloy composition, thermomechanical process, and microstructural feature, a Co-Cr-Ni-based medium-entropy alloy with a dual heterogeneous structure of both matrix and precipitates can be designed to provide an ultra-high tensile strength of 2.2 GPa and uniform elongation of 13% at ambient temperature.
Abstract: Alloys with ultra-high strength and sufficient ductility are highly desired for modern engineering applications but difficult to develop. Here we report that, by a careful controlling alloy composition, thermomechanical process, and microstructural feature, a Co-Cr-Ni-based medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with a dual heterogeneous structure of both matrix and precipitates can be designed to provide an ultra-high tensile strength of 2.2 GPa and uniform elongation of 13% at ambient temperature, properties that are much improved over their counterparts without the heterogeneous structure. Electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the dual heterogeneous structures are composed of a heterogeneous matrix with both coarse grains (10∼30 μm) and ultra-fine grains (0.5∼2 μm), together with heterogeneous L12-structured nanoprecipitates ranging from several to hundreds of nanometers. The heterogeneous L12 nanoprecipitates are fully coherent with the matrix, minimizing the elastic misfit strain of interfaces, relieving the stress concentration during deformation, and playing an active role in enhanced ductility. Improving both strength and ductility simultaneously in structural metals and alloys remains a challenge. Here, the authors design a heterogeneous structure in a Co-Cr-Ni alloy that results in ultrahigh strength and significant uniform elongation.
