Abstract: Objective:Previous meta-analyses of cohort studies indicate a J-shaped relationship between alcohol consumption and all-cause mortality, with reduced risk for low-volume drinkers. However, low-volume drinkers may appear healthy only because the “abstainers” with whom they are compared are biased toward ill health. The purpose of this study was to determine whether misclassifying former and occasional drinkers as abstainers and other potentially confounding study characteristics underlie observed positive health outcomes for low-volume drinkers in prospective studies of all-cause mortality.Method:A systematic review and meta-regression analysis of studies investigating alcohol use and mortality risk after controlling for quality-related study characteristics was conducted in a population of 3,998,626 individuals, among whom 367,103 deaths were recorded.Results:Without adjustment, meta-analysis of all 87 included studies replicated the classic J-shaped curve, with low-volume drinkers (1.3–24.9 g ethanol per...

Abstract: Production of radicals by metal-free catalysis is expected to offer a promising oxidative reaction for remediation of emerging contaminants. In this study, novel metal-free activation of persulfate (PS) on annealed nanodiamonds (ANDs) was investigated, which demonstrated superior performances in decomposition of various pollutants to conventional metal-based catalysis. Comprehensive investigations on the effects of reaction parameters, such as solution pH, reaction temperature, initial phenol concentration, catalyst loading, PS usage, the presence of chlorine ions and humic acid, on phenol degradation were carried out. In addition, nanodiamond (ND) material optimization and reusability were also studied. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and selective organic degradation unraveled that the PS/AND system may produce both hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4 −), initialized from oxidizing water molecules on the nanodiamond surface. The carbocatalysts served as an excellent electron tunnel to facilitate the charge transfer from water or hydroxide ions to PS, and the oxidized intermediates may play a crucial role in PS activation. Electrochemical analyses in PS oxidant solution and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were carried out to understand O O bond activation by the metal-free catalysis. This study provides an environmentally benign and highly efficient oxidative reaction system with reactive radicals along with insights into the metal-free PS activation process.

Abstract: Seminal works in the application of design science research (DSR) in IS emphasize the importance of evaluation. However, discussion of evaluation activities and methods is limited and typically assumes an ex post perspective, in which evaluation occurs after the construction of an IS artifact. Such perspectives can assume that the evaluation is an empirical process and its methods can be selected in the same way as empirical research methods. In this paper, we analyze a broader range of evaluation strategies, which includes ex ante (prior to artifact construction) evaluation. This broader view is developed as a strategic DSR evaluation framework, which expands evaluation choices for IS DSR researchers, and also adds emphasis to strategies for evaluating design processes in addition to design products, using well-known quality criteria as an important asset. The framework encompasses both ex ante and ex post orientations as well as naturalistic settings (e.g., case studies) and artificial settings (e.g., lab experiments) for DSR evaluation. The framework proposed offers a strategic view of DSR evaluation that is useful in analyzing published studies, and also in surfacing the evaluation opportunities that present themselves to IS DSR researchers.

Abstract: Research on linking operational marketing inputs to customer attitudes and customer behavior has been gaining significance concomitant with the growing recognition that customers are market-based assets. In response to this, researchers and practitioners have proposed several conceptual models. Despite recent advances in research, the results are still inconclusive as to the relationship between customer attitude and future sales. A reason for this could be due to the paucity of studies combining survey-based data with behavioral data to understand better the drivers of customer behavior. With that in mind, the authors investigate the effects of customer perceptions of key marketing actions on customer attitudes and actual customer behavior as reflected by future sales. The authors propose that customer perceptions of value, brand, and relationship—“customer equity drivers”—affect loyalty intentions and future sales. The results of the study, which is based on a sample of 5694 customers of a large European do-it-yourself retailer, suggest that customer equity drivers can significantly predict future sales, even after the authors control for the current sales level.

Abstract: A zeolitic-imidazolate-framework (ZIF) nanocrystal layer-protected carbonization route is developed to prepare N-doped nanoporous carbon/graphene nano-sandwiches. The ZIF/graphene oxide/ZIF sandwich-like structure with ultrasmall ZIF nanocrystals (i.e., ≈20 nm) fully covering the graphene oxide (GO) is prepared via a homogenous nucleation followed by a uniform deposition and confined growth process. The uniform coating of ZIF nanocrystals on the GO layer can effectively inhibit the agglomeration of GO during high-temperature treatment (800 °C). After carbonization and acid etching, N-doped nanoporous carbon/graphene nanosheets are formed, with a high specific surface area (1170 m2 g−1). These N-doped nanoporous carbon/graphene nanosheets are used as the nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and exhibit a high onset potential (0.92 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode; RHE) and a large limiting current density (5.2 mA cm−2 at 0.60 V). To further increase the oxygen reduction performance, nanoporous Co-Nx/carbon nanosheets are also prepared by using cobalt nitrate and zinc nitrate as cometal sources, which reveal higher onset potential (0.96 V) than both commercial Pt/C (0.94 V) and N-doped nanoporous carbon/graphene nanosheets. Such nanoporous Co-Nx/carbon nanosheets also exhibit good performance such as high activity, stability, and methanol tolerance in acidic media.
