Abstract: The paper elaborates on the spatial-temporal modeling of linguistic and dialect phenomena. Language Geography—a branch of Human Geography—tries to enhance the visual exploration of linguistic data, and utilizes a number of methodologies from GIScience, whereas publications focusing on analyzing linguistic data in GIScience are hard to find. This research work highlights the representation of language and/or dialect regions with combined indeterminate and crisp boundaries—i.e. frontiers and borders. Both boundary “types” are necessary in order to model the spatial-temporal dynamics of language phenomena. The article analyzes the emerging, ending, moving and merging of linguistic/dialect regions and phenomena with respect to space and time and the boundary types. In order to represent frontiers or indeterminate boundaries, fuzzy logic is employed.

Abstract: Cartilage breakdown, inflammation and pain are hallmark symptoms of osteoarthritis, and autologous blood products such as citrate-anticoagulated platelet-rich plasma (CPRP) or hyperacute serum (hypACT) have been developed as a regenerative approach to rebuild cartilage, inhibit inflammation and reduce pain. However, mechanisms of action of these blood derivatives are still not fully understood, in part due to the large number of components present in these medical products. In addition, the discovery of extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their involvement in intercellular communication mediated by cargo molecules like microRNAs (miRNAs) opened up a whole new level of complexity in understanding blood products. In this study we focused on the development of an isolation protocol for EVs from CPRP and hypACT that can also deplete lipoproteins, which are often co-isolated in EV research due to shared physical properties. Several isolation methods were compared in terms of particle yield from CPRP and hypACT. To gain insights into the functional repertoire conveyed via EV-associated miRNAs, we performed functional enrichment analysis and identified NFκB signaling strongly targeted by CPRP EV miRNAs, whereas hypACT EV miRNAs affect IL6- and TGFβ/SMAD signaling.

Abstract: The advent of chatbots may influence many treatment procedures in the medical and psychological fields. In particular, chatbots may be useful in many situations before and after medical procedures when patients are back at home. For example, while being in the preparation phase of a colonoscopy, a chatbot might answer patient questions more quickly than a doctor. Moreover, it is more and more discussed whether chatbots may be the first entry point for (urgent) medical questions instead of the consultation of a medical expert, as there exist already well-established algorithms for some of these situations. For example, if a new medical symptom occurs, a chatbot might serve as the first “expert” to relieve a patient’s condition. Note that the latter situation to use chatbots is mainly driven by the trend that patients often have to wait too long for appointments with a proper medical expert due to capacity problems of many healthcare systems. While the usage of supporting “at home actions” of patients with chatbot technologies is typically welcomed by medical experts, the use of this technology to “replace” them in their core competence, namely diagnosis and therapy, is generally seen highly critical. Apart from the domain side, it must be carefully considered what currently available chatbot technologies can do or cannot do. Moreover, it has also to be considered, how existing technologies can be established in highly critical medical and interdisciplinary fields with possible emergency situations (e.g., if a chatbot gets the message of a patient that indicates to commit suicide), involving ethical questions as well as questions of responsibility and accountability. Therefore, this work raises aspects that might be the basis for medical as well as technical experts to better work together for proper chatbot solutions. Thereby, the work at hand proposes an architecture that should serve as a reference for various medical and psychological scenarios. When using suitable technical solutions, we argue that chances emerge, which mitigate upcoming challenges significantly.

Abstract: Alternative technologies for extracorporeal blood purification systems based on microadsorbents in suspension are discussed. Principally, microadsorbents offer higher efficiency and flexibility when compared to conventional column-based adsorption systems. Systems already clinically employed (e.g., BioLogic DT) or close to clinical application (e.g., the microspheres-based detoxification system, MDS) are described. The MDS technology, in particular, is characterized by efficiency and a high degree of flexibility with respect to both the use of different adsorbents as well as the combination with hemodialysis/hemofiltration therapy. It was designed for continuous use in intensive-care units, but enables also the removal of low-density lipoprotein, fibrinogen, autoimmune antibodies, immune complexes, and other pathophysiologically relevant substances. Alternative anticoagulation regimes and safety systems on fluorescence sensor technology have recently been developed for the MDS and are presented in this paper.

Abstract: Authoring clinical guidelines as well as observing the execution and the maintenance of these is a time-consuming and cumbersome task. Usually, clinical guidelines are represented in conceptual models, which are very hard to understand by domain experts. Furthermore, to analyze the effectiveness and usefulness of clinical guidelines they need to be shown in connection with the patients’ data. In this overview book chapter we present different methods to visualize clinical guidelines, patients’ data, and the connection thereof. Finally, we illustrate how the different visualization methods support the various tasks in plan management.
