TYDR: track your daily routine. Android app for tracking smartphone sensor and usage data

Abstract: We present the Android app TYDR (Track Your Daily Routine) which tracks smartphone sensor and usage data and utilizes standardized psychometric personality questionnaires. With the app, we aim at collecting data for researching correlations between the tracked smartphone data and the user's personality in order to predict personality from smartphone data. In this paper, we highlight our approaches in addressing the challenges in developing such an app. We optimize the tracking of sensor data by assessing the trade-off of size of data and battery consumption and granularity of the stored information. Our user interface is designed to incentivize users to install the app and fill out questionnaires. TYDR processes and visualizes the tracked sensor and usage data as well as the results of the personality questionnaires. When developing an app that will be used in psychological studies, requirements posed by ethics commissions / institutional review boards and data protection officials have to be met. We detail our approaches concerning those requirements regarding the anonymized storing of user data, informing the users about the data collection, and enabling an opt-out option. We present our process for anonymized data storing while still being able to identify individual users who successfully completed a psychological study with the app.

Constructing ‘the people’: An intersectional analysis of right-wing concepts of democracy and citizenship in Austria

Abstract: This article analyses right-wing populist constructions of ‘the people’ emerging at the intersections of ethnicized ‘othering’ and gendered differences within groups. We argue that these constructions are in stark contrast to the liberal notion of citizenship, which we understand to be the basis for the demos. Right-wing populism constructs its politics of belonging beyond rights, i.e. ‘the people’ is defined as a community through identity with the political leader, rather than as a political entity marked by different interests and endowed with rights, which could be represented politically. We argue that it is important to not only analyse practices of ‘othering’ and exclusion, but also the appeal to the ‘we’-group in order to understand right-wing populist success. Empirically our Critical Frame Analysis focuses on the Austrian context and on the FPO, which has been a forerunner in the ‘modernization’ of right-wing extremism and the development of right-wing populism in Europe.

Examining ethical leadership in health care organizations and its impacts on employee work attitudes: an empirical analysis from Austria.

Abstract: PURPOSE This study aims to examine the effects of ethical leadership on job satisfaction, affective commitment and burnout of health care employees, considering frustration tolerance and emotional stability as moderating variables. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH A questionnaire was used to survey health care professionals working in private and public Austrian health-care organizations (hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and sanatoriums). The questionnaire consisted of items from well-established scales. The collected data (n = 458) was analyzed using correlation and regression analyzes. FINDINGS Findings indicated that ethical leadership is significantly positively related to job satisfaction (r = 0.485, p < 0.01) and affective commitment (r = 0.461, p < 0.01) and is significantly negatively related to burnout (r = -0.347, p < 0.01). The results also suggest that frustration tolerance (s = 0.101, p < 0.1) and emotional stability (s = 0.093, p < 0.1) moderate the relationship between ethical leadership and burnout. Furthermore, a moderation effect of emotional stability in the ethical leadership and affective commitment relation was indicated. No moderation effect was found for frustration tolerance or emotional stability for the relationship between ethical leadership and job satisfaction. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Ethical leadership emphasizes the socio-emotional dimension in a leader-employee relationship, which can easily be neglected in times of staff cuts and work overload. Leadership training should include the development of skills in how to visibly act as a moral person, as well as how to set clear ethical standards and communicate them to employees. ORIGINALITY/VALUE This study adds value to the limited evidence on the beneficial role of ethical leadership in health care settings. In addition, frustration tolerance and emotional stability have not before been investigated as moderators.

Methods and performance aspects for wireless clock synchronization in IEEE 802.11 for the IoT

Abstract: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks are an appealing complement, if not an alternative, to Ethernet-based industrial solutions because it not only can match Ethernet's high throughput but also leads to reduced costs and more system-design flexibility. However, like in Ethernet, clock synchronization service for applications has not been inherently present in IEEE 802.11. This paper analyzes the clock synchronization mechanisms of IEEE 802.11, which has become a major communication technology to establish the Internet of Things in industries, and how they can be used to provide high precision clock synchronization. In doing so, this work discusses the different parameters which can affect the performance of clock synchronization over the wireless channel, such as timestamping quality, clock adjustment, and synchronization overhead. An outlook to the future includes the new trends for synchronization for wired-wireless hybrid and fully wireless mesh networks where the IEEE 802.1AS audio video bridging networks and IEEE 802.11s mesh networks are leading the line, respectively.
