Abstract: Competing predictions about the effect of social exclusion were tested by meta-analyzing findings from studies of interpersonal rejection, ostracism, and similar procedures. Rejection appears to cause a significant shift toward a more negative emotional state. Typically, however, the result was an emotionally neutral state marked by low levels of both positive and negative affect. Acceptance caused a slight increase in positive mood and a moderate increase in self-esteem. Self-esteem among rejected persons was no different from neutral controls. These findings are discussed in terms of belongingness motivation, sociometer theory, affective numbing, and self-esteem defenses.

Abstract: This article examines recent rainfall conditions throughout the Sahel and in other parts of West Africa in detail and presents an overview of changes in rainfall on timescales of decades for Africa as a whole. In West Africa, there has been a pattern of continued aridity since the late 1960s that is most persistent in the more western regions. Some recovery occurred in the easternmost sectors during the 1990s, with rainfall in some years being near or just above the long-term mean. Dry conditions continued during 1997, but that year was not unusually dry compared to others of the last two decades. Hence, it appears that the 1997 El Nino did not have a large impact in the region. A preliminary analysis suggests that in 1998 rainfall was still below the long-term mean in most of the Sahel, but the central Sahel of Niger experienced localized flooding due to high rainfall in September. Abstract: In this paper, we show that a key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) does not have to be IND-CCA secure in the construction of hybrid encryption schemes, as was previously believed. That is, we present a more efficient hybrid encryption scheme than Shoup [12] by using a KEM which is not necessarily IND-CCA secure. Nevertheless, our scheme is secure in the sense of IND-CCA under the DDH assumption in the standard model. This result is further generalized to universal2 projective hash families.

Abstract: Weathering of uplifted continental rocks consumes carbon dioxide and transports cations to the oceans, thereby playing a critical role in controlling both seawater chemistry and climate. However, there are few archives of seawater chemical change that reveal shifts in global tectonic forces connecting Earth ocean-climate processes. We present a 68-million-year record of lithium isotopes in seawater (δ7LiSW) reconstructed from planktonic foraminifera. From the Paleocene (60 million years ago) to the present, δ7LiSW rose by 9 per mil (‰), requiring large changes in continental weathering and seafloor reverse weathering that are consistent with increased tectonic uplift, more rapid continental denudation, increasingly incongruent continental weathering (lower chemical weathering intensity), and more rapid CO2 drawdown. A 5‰ drop in δ7LiSW across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary cannot be produced by an impactor or by Deccan trap volcanism, suggesting large-scale continental denudation.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with p(T)<8 GeV/c and neutral pions with p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured yields are compared to those in p+p collisions at the same sqrt[s(NN)] scaled up by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions in d+Au. The yield ratio does not show the suppression observed in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Instead, there is a small enhancement in the yield of high momentum particles.
