Abstract: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a unique sub-population of tumor cells with the ability to initiate tumor growth and sustain self-renewal. Although CSC biomarkers have been described for various tumors, only a few markers have been identified for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we show that CD24+ cells isolated from human NPC cell lines express stem cell genes (Sox2, Oct4, Nanog, Bmi-1, and Rex-1), and show activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. CD24+ cells possess typical CSC characteristics that include enhanced cell proliferation, increased colony and sphere formation, maintenance of cell differentiation potential in prolonged culture, and enhanced resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. Notably, CD24+ cells produce tumors following inoculation of as few as 500 cells in immunodeficient NOD/SCID mice. CD24+ cells further show increased invasion ability in vitro, which correlates with enhanced expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 and 9. In summary, our results suggest that CD24 represents a novel CSC biomarker in NPC.

Abstract: Laboratory-based diagnostic measures including virological and serological tests are essential for detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactions (rRT-PCR) can detect SARS-COV-2 by targeting open reading frame-1 antibodies (ORF1ab), envelope protein, nucleocapsid protein, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase genes, and the N1, N2, and N3 (3N) target genes. Therefore, rRT-PCR remains the primary method of diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 despite being limited by false-negative results, long turnaround, complex protocols, and a need for skilled personnel. Serological diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is simple and does not require complex techniques and equipment, rendering it suitable for rapid detection and massive screening. However, serological tests cannot confirm SARS-CoV-2, and results will be false-negative when antibody concentrations fall below detection limits. Balancing the increased use of laboratory tests, risk of testing errors, need for tests, burden on healthcare systems, benefits of early diagnosis, and risk of unnecessary exposure is a significant and persistent challenge in diagnosing COVID-19.

Abstract: Structure, dielectric permittivity, strain, electric ( E ) polarization, and piezoelectric responses of (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 ) 0.925 Ba 0.075 (Ti 1− x Zr x )O 3 (BNT7.5BT-100 x Zr; x = 0–0.04) ceramics were investigated as functions of poling E field and temperature. The BNT7.5BT ceramic reveals a phase transition from P4bm nanodomains to long-range-ordered P4mm domains. The Zr-doped BNT7.5BT ceramic reveals a reversible change of unit cell with dynamically fluctuating polar nanoregions, which are responsible for the large strain. The poled BNT7.5BT ceramic displays a depolarization temperature of T d = 90 °C, which correspond to a phase transition from ferroelectric to relaxor states. The Zr-doped BNT7.5BT ceramics have Burns temperatures ( T B ) in the region of 400–435 °C, below which polar nanoregions begin to develop. The Zr-doped BNT7.5BT ceramics display wide diffuse phase transitions, suggesting a transition from R + T to T phases. BNT7.5BT-2Zr ceramic shows a temperature dependent linear large strain of 0.482% at 150 °C and can be a potential candidate for lead-free actuator.

Abstract: This cross-sectional study analysed the frequency and severity of work stressors and job satisfaction at workplaces in relation to work-related non-fatal injuries amongst a sample of petrochemical workers in Taiwan. The study participants consisted of 568 cases injured on the job between 1991 and 1997, and 954 injury-free controls matched to cases on frequencies of age, sex and work site. After adjusting for potential confounders, we found that cases were more likely than controls to report stressors with a higher frequency [odds ratio (OR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.9-2.0] and a more severe reaction (OR = 1.3, 95% CI = 0.9-1.8). The dose-response analyses further indicated that the OR of injury was monotonically associated with stress reaction only (P for test for trend of ORs = 0.02). Job satisfaction, though, was unrelated to non-fatal injury. Although the cross-sectional nature of our study precludes a causal inference between stress reaction to stressors and risk of developing non-fatal injuries, our results tend to suggest that the severity of stress reaction is more associated with occupational non-fatal injury than is the frequency of stress or job dissatisfaction.
