Abstract: Objective Little is known about serum uric acid (SUA) role for hypertension in the Asian countries with low cardiovascular events. We aimed to explore the relationship in a comprehensive Chinese cohort. Methods Participants in the Taiwanese Survey on Prevalences of Hypertension, Hyperglycemia, and Hyperlipidemia (TwSHHH) who were free of hypertension at baseline recruitment in 2002 (n= 3257) were evaluated for the longitudinal association between baseline SUA and blood pressure progression (BPP) and incident hypertension. Results During a mean follow-up of 5.41 years, 1119 persons (34.3%) had experienced progression to a higher blood pressure stage and 496 persons (15.2%) had developed hypertension. In multivariate analyses, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] comparing the highest and lowest SUA quartiles were 1.78 (1.11–2.02, P for trend .004) for BPP and 1.68 (1.23–2.04, P for trend .028) for incident hypertension. The positively graded relationships between SUA concentration and blood pressure outcomes were observed in both males and females. More interestingly, a statistically significant trend for increasing risk of BPP and incident hypertension across SUA quartiles was most pronounced in participants with abdominal obesity. Conclusion We concluded that SUA level was an independent predictor of blood pressure progression and incident hypertension in a Chinese population.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a design using both a microprocessor and light sensors for automatic room light detection and control Our design, the HLCM (Home Light Control Module) which will be installed in every light fixture of a family, is made up of four blocks: the pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor circuit, the light sensor circuit, the microprocessor and the RF module By using the PIR sensor circuit, the HLCM detects if a human body enters the detection area or not If there is no human body present, all controlled lights are turned off If there is, the HLCM detects the light intensity under the environment and maintains sufficient light by controlling the number of lights We have also integrated an RF module to transmit and receive the data from each HLCM so we can control different lights in different regions The result of using the HLCM shows that the total power consumption can be reduced

Abstract: Skin irritation and contact allergies are skin disorders common to hairdressers. The predominant oxidative hair dye components, such as p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and aminophenol isomers, can cause contact dermatitis. Use of protective gloves can prevent dermal contact with skin irritants. This study investigates the permeation behaviors of p-aminophenol (PAP), m-aminophenol (MAP), o-aminophenol (OAP) and PPD in single and mixed challenge solutions with disposable natural rubber latex (NRL) gloves, disposable polyvinylchloride (PVC) gloves and neoprene (NP) gloves. The challenge solutions were 4% PPD (w/v), 3% OAP (w/v), 2% PAP (w/v) and 2% MAP (w/v) in ethanol or 12% hydrogen peroxide solutions. The cocktail solutions of the four chemicals were also tested. An American Society for Testing and Materials type permeation cell, ethanol liquid collection and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection of samples taken from the collection medium every 10 min facilitated determination of breakthrough times (BTs), cumulative permeated masses and steady-state permeation rates (SSPRs). Experiments were 4 h long for the NRL and PVC gloves and 8 h for NP gloves. No chemicals tested broke through the NP gloves when exposed for 8 h. In the ethanol solution, PPD and OAP started breaking through the PVC gloves at 40 min. The SSPRs of PVC gloves were higher than those for NRL gloves in all challenge conditions for both single chemicals and mixtures. No tested chemicals in hydrogen peroxide solutions permeated the gloves during the 4-h tests. The chemical composition of the challenge solution was a main effecter of BTs and SSPRs for the NRL glove. For disposable PVC gloves, the main factors of BTs were molecular size [molar volume (MV)] and polarity (logK(ow)), and the primary factors of SSPRs were concentration, MV and logK(ow). In conclusion, disposable NRL gloves and disposable PVC gloves should not be used repeatedly for handling the hair dye products. Hydrogen peroxide did not accelerate chemical breakthrough. The compositions of the challenge solutions and physical and chemical properties (MV and logK(ow)) affected permeation behaviors for different gloves.

Abstract: We have investigated the electrical conduction processes in as-grown and thermally cycled ZnO single crystal as well as as-grown ZnO polycrystalline films over the wide temperature range 20–500 K. In the case of ZnO single crystal between 110 and 500 K, two types of thermal activation conduction processes are observed. This is explained in terms of the existence of both shallow donors and intermediately deep donors that are consecutively excited to the conduction band as the temperature increases. By measuring the resistivity ρ(T) of a given single crystal after repeated thermal cycling in vacuum, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies play an important role in governing the shallow donor concentrations but leave the activation energy (≈ 27±2 meV) largely intact. In the case of polycrystalline films, two types of thermal activation conduction processes are also observed between ~150 and 500 K.
