Abstract: Detecting events from web resources has attracted increasing research interests in recent years. Our focus in this paper is to detect events from photos on Flickr, an Internet image community website. The results can be used to facilitate user searching and browsing photos by events. The problem is challenging considering: (1) Flickr data is noisy, because there are photos unrelated to real-world events; (2) It is not easy to capture the content of photos. This paper presents our effort in detecting events from Flickr photos by exploiting the tags supplied by users to annotate photos. In particular, the temporal and locational distributions of tag usage are analyzed in the first place, where a wavelet transform is employed to suppress noise. Then, we identify tags related with events, and further distinguish between tags of aperiodic events and those of periodic events. Afterwards, event-related tags are clustered such that each cluster, representing an event, consists of tags with similar temporal and locational distribution patterns as well as with similar associated photos. Finally, for each tag cluster, photos corresponding to the represented event are extracted. We evaluate the performance of our approach using a set of real data collected from Flickr. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach is effective in detecting events from the Flickr photo collection.

Abstract: We report on the oxygen vacancy induced ferromagnetism (FM) at and above room temperature in undoped TiO2 nanoporous nanoribbons synthesized by a solvothermal route. The origin of FM in as-synthesized and vacuum annealed undoped nanoribbons grown for different reaction durations followed by calcinations was investigated by several experimental tools. X-Ray diffraction pattern and micro-Raman studies reveal the TiO2(B), TiO2(B)-anatase, and anatase–rutile mixed phases of TiO2 structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations reveal nanoribbons with uniform pore distribution and nanopits/nanobricks formed on the surface. These samples exhibit strong visible photoluminescence associated with oxygen vacancies and a clear ferromagnetic hysteresis loop, both of which dramatically enhanced after vacuum annealing. Direct evidence of oxygen vacancies and related Ti3+ in the as-prepared and vacuum annealed TiO2 samples are provided through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Micro-Raman, infrared absorption and optical absorption spectroscopic analyses further support our conclusion. The observed room temperature FM in undoped TiO2 nanoribbons is quantitatively analyzed and explained through a model involving bound magnetic polarons (BMP), which include an electron locally trapped by an oxygen vacancy with the trapped electron occupying an orbital overlapping with the unpaired electron (3d1) of Ti3+ ion. Our analysis interestingly shows that the calculated BMP concentration scales linearly with concentration of oxygen vacancies and provides a stronger footing for exploiting defect engineered ferromagnetism in undoped TiO2 nanostructures. The development of such highly porous TiO2 nanoribbons constitutes an important step towards realizing improved visible light photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications of this novel material.

Abstract: We report results from the first search for ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δ_{CP}<0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

Abstract: Network performance monitoring today is restricted by existing switch support for measurement, forcing operators to rely heavily on endpoints with poor visibility into the network core. Switch vendors have added progressively more monitoring features to switches, but the current trajectory of adding specific features is unsustainable given the ever-changing demands of network operators. Instead, we ask what switch hardware primitives are required to support an expressive language of network performance questions. We believe that the resulting switch hardware design could address a wide variety of current and future performance monitoring needs.We present a performance query language, Marple, modeled on familiar functional constructs like map, filter, groupby, and zip. Marple is backed by a new programmable key-value store primitive on switch hardware. The key-value store performs flexible aggregations at line rate (e.g., a moving average of queueing latencies per flow), and scales to millions of keys. We present a Marple compiler that targets a P4-programmable software switch and a simulator for high-speed programmable switches. Marple can express switch queries that could previously run only on end hosts, while Marple queries only occupy a modest fraction of a switch's hardware resources.
