Abstract: We have made and characterized a new, erbium-doped tellurite glass that has high glass transition temperature. Addition of phosphate is found to increase the phonon energy. The peak emission cross section is 6 × 10-21 cm2 at 1537 nm and the fluorescence lifetime of the 4I13/2-4I15/2 transition is 4.1 ms. We have written 2-D channel waveguides in this glass using focused, 45-fs pulses from an amplified Ti:sapphire laser at different laser energies and writing speeds. Migration of atoms towards the periphery of the waveguides occurs, leading to refractive index changes. Channels show waveguiding at 1310 nm which is promising for the fabrication of integrated lasers and broadband amplifiers.

Abstract: We study the impact of axion emission in simulations of massive star explosions, as an additional source of energy loss complementary to the standard neutrino emission. The inclusion of this channel shortens the cooling time of the nascent protoneutron star and hence the duration of the neutrino signal. We treat the axion-matter coupling strength as a free parameter to study its impact on the protoneutron star evolution as well as on the neutrino signal. We furthermore analyze the observability of the enhanced cooling in current and next-generation underground neutrino detectors, showing that values of the axion mass ${m}_{a}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ can be probed. Therefore a galactic supernova neutrino observation would provide a valuable possibility to probe axion masses in a range within reach of the planned helioscope experiment, the International Axion Observatory.

Abstract: Cu(II) complexes of three tridentate ligands, L1, L2 and L3,[ L1, N-((1H-imidazole-2-yl)methyl)-2-(pyridine-2-yl)ethanamine; L2, N-((1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-yl)methyl)-2-(pyridine-2-yl)ethanamine; L3, 2-(pyridine-2-yl)-N-((pyridine-2-yl)methyl)ethanamine] respectively, were synthesized and characterized. The single crystal X-ray structure of complex 1 reveals the pseudo octahedral coordination geometry around the copper center. Absorption and fluorescence experimental evidence show good DNA binding propensity (in the order of 105 M−1) of the complexes. Thermal denaturation and circular dichroism (CD) analyses reveal minor structural changes of calf thymus (CT) DNA in presence of complexes and groove and/or surface binding of the complexes to CT-DNA. Kinetic DNA cleavage assay shows pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction between the complex and supercoiled (SC) DNA. In addition, mechanistic SC DNA cleavage results show higher DNA cleavage activity in presence of reducing agent, due to the presence of hydroxyl radicals. In vitro cytotoxicity assay of the complexes demonstrate that the complexes have low toxicity for different cancer cell lines and IC50 values were between 37 and 156 μM.
