Abstract: The effect of MgO as a solid-solution additive in the sintering of Al2O3 was studied. The separate effects of the additive on densification and grain growth were assessed. Magnesia was found to increase the densification rate during sintering by a factor of 3 through a raising of the diffusion rate. The grain-size dependence of the densification rate indicated control primarily by grain-boundary diffusion. Magnesia also increased the grain growth rate during sintering by a factor of 2.5. The dependence of the grain growth rate on density and grain size suggested a mechanism of surface-diffusion-controlled pore drag. It was argued, therefore, that MgO enhanced grain growth by raising the surface diffusion coefficient. The effect of MgO on the densification rate/grain growth rate ratio was, therefore, found to be minimal and, consequently, MgO did not have a significant effect on the grain size/density trajectory during sintering. The role of MgO in the sintering of alumina was attributed mainly to its ability to lower the grain-boundary mobility.

Abstract: Full-thickness, dermal wounds were surgically created on the dorsa of fetal rats on the 17th day of gestation. The granulation tissue which developed after 2 days (19 days of gestation) was harvested from six to nine animals and pooled and the collagen was extracted with 0.5 M acetic acid and acetic acid plus pepsin. The ratio of type III:type I collagen was estimated from densitometer scans of electrophoretically separated alpha-chains. Full-thickness (to fascia depth) wounds were also produced on the dorsa of adult rats and granulation tissue which had developed for different periods of time up to 30 days was excised. Relative proportions of type III and type I collagen were assessed in normal and granulation tissues taken from the adult rats. Both fetal and adult granulation tissues have elevated type III collagen content but normal fetal tissue has a much higher content of type III than does normal adult tissue.

Abstract: The dispersion of hydrophilic and hydrophobic titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles in organic media (styrene and cyclohexane) was studied to evaluate the effect of dispersion quality (i.e., size and stability) on the encapsulation efficiencies of subsequent miniemulsion polymerizations. Through screening studies of various block copolymers, OLOA 370 (polybutene–succinimide pentamine) was chosen as the stabilizer for detailed dispersion studies on both types of TiO2 particles. As a result of strong interactions between the amine end group of the OLOA 370 stabilizer and the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the hydrophilic TiO2 particles, a good dispersion stability and small particle size (Dv = 39–45 nm) was obtained using 1.0 wt % stabilizer and 20 min of sonification. The dispersions of the hydrophobic TiO2 particles resulted in a larger average particle size (Dv = 60 nm) and poorer stability. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
