Abstract: This paper proposes an appliance scheduling scheme for residential building energy management controllers, by taking advantage of the time-varying retail pricing enabled by the two-way communication infrastructure of the smart grid. Finite-horizon scheduling optimization problems are formulated to exploit operational flexibilities of thermal and non-thermal appliances using a model predictive control (MPC) method which incorporates both forecasts and newly updated information. For thermal appliance scheduling, the thermal mass of the building, which serves as thermal storage, is integrated into the optimization problem by modeling the thermodynamics of rooms in a building as constraints. Within the comfort range modeled by the predicted mean vote (PMV) index, thermal appliances are scheduled smartly together with thermal mass storage to hedge against high prices and make use of low-price time periods. For non-thermal appliance scheduling, in which delay and/or power consumption flexibilities are available, operation dependence of inter-appliance and intra-appliance is modeled to further exploit the price variation. Simulation results show that customers have notable energy cost savings on their electricity bills with time-varying pricing. The impact of customers' preferences of appliances usage on energy cost savings is also evaluated.

Abstract: Direct methane conversion into aromatic hydrocarbons over catalysts with molybdenum (Mo) nanostructures supported on shape-selective zeolites is a promising technology for natural gas liquefaction. We determined the identity and anchoring sites of the initial Mo structures in such catalysts as isolated oxide species with a single Mo atom on aluminum sites in the zeolite framework and on silicon sites on the zeolite external surface. During the reaction, the initial isolated Mo oxide species agglomerate and convert into carbided Mo nanoparticles. This process is reversible, and the initial isolated Mo oxide species can be restored by a treatment with gas-phase oxygen. Furthermore, the distribution of the Mo nanostructures can be controlled and catalytic performance can be fully restored, even enhanced, by adjusting the oxygen treatment.

Abstract: We examine the association between the existence and the magnitude of a fraudulent event, nonfraudulent restatements of financial statements, and nine competing models of discretionary accruals, accrual estimation errors (Dechow and Dichev 2002 and McNichols 2002), and the Beneish (1999) M-score. We use the size of the downward earnings restatement following the discovery of the fraud to proxy for the degree of discretion exercised to perpetrate the fraud. We find that while total accruals are associated with the existence of fraud, discretionary accruals derived from the Jones model, the modified Jones model, and performance-matched models are not associated with fraud. Accrual estimation errors and M-score have explanatory power for fraud beyond total accruals. We also find that commonly used measures of discretionary accruals, accrual estimation errors, and the M-score are associated with the magnitude of the fraud. Only the accrual estimation errors are associated with non-fraud restatements.

Abstract: It has been recently shown that multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems have the potential to dramatically improve the performance of communication systems over single antenna systems. Unlike beamforming, which presumes a high correlation between signals either transmitted or received by an array, the MIMO concept exploits the independence between signals at the array elements. In conventional radar, the target's radar cross section (RCS) fluctuations are regarded as a nuisance parameter that degrades radar performance. The novelty of MIMO radar is that it provides measures to overcome those degradations or even utilizes the RCS fluctuations for new applications. This paper explores how transmit diversity can improve the direction finding performance of a radar utilizing an antenna array at the receiver. To harness diversity, the transmit antennas have to be widely separated, while for direction finding, the receive antennas have to be closely spaced. The analysis is carried out by evaluating several Cramer-Rao bounds for bearing estimation and the mean square error of the maximum likelihood estimate
