TL;DR: The armadillo gene is a segment polarity gene of Drosophila involved in signal transduction through wingless and combines structural roles as cell-contact and cytoskeleton-associated proteins and signaling functions by generating and transducing signals affecting gene expression.
Abstract: The armadillo gene is a segment polarity gene of Drosophila involved in signal transduction through wingless. Since the mid-1980s, a growing number of related proteins have been identified based on sequence homologies. These proteins share a central domain that is composed of a series of imperfect 45 amino acid repeats. Armadillo family members reveal diverse cellular locations reflecting their diverse functions. A single protein exerts several functions through interactions of its armadillo repeat domain with diverse binding partners. The proteins combine structural roles as cell-contact and cytoskeleton-associated proteins and signaling functions by generating and transducing signals affecting gene expression. The study of armadillo family members has made it increasingly clear that a distinction between structural proteins on the one hand and signaling molecules on the other is rather artificial. Instead armadillo family members exert both functions by interacting with a number of distinct cellular-binding partners.

TL;DR: Current understanding of epidemiology, underlying factors, concomitant disease, as well as available intervention strategies are summarized and an overview of what has been reached so far and what measures should be undertaken to counteract the obesogenic environment is given.
Abstract: Prevalence of childhood obesity has worldwide more than doubled since 1980. Underlying factors are complex and are far from completely understood. Strategies to prevent childhood obesity have mainly focused on behavioral intervention; and obesity therapy was mainly based on lifestyle modification to date. However, effects for both have been quite limited so far and no country has succeeded in fighting the obesity epidemy we are facing. Normalization of body weight before onset of puberty is crucial for several reasons: First, obese children and adolescents frequently stay obese until adulthood. Second, obesity during adolescence is significantly associated with increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic disease such as type 2 diabetes in adulthood. And third, recent data have shown a strong association between higher body mass index (BMI) during adolescence and increased risk for several malignancies such as leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, colorectal cancer, breast cancer and others in adulthood. This review summarizes our current understanding of epidemiology, underlying factors, concomitant disease, as well as available intervention strategies and gives an overview of what has been reached so far and what measures should be undertaken to counteract the obesogenic environment.

TL;DR: The PP-LFERs revealed that partition coefficients into membrane lipids can be two log units higher than those into storage lipids for H-bond donor compounds, suggesting that distinguishing between the two lipids is necessary to account for the bioaccumulation of these compounds.
Abstract: Lipids have been considered as the predominant components for bioaccumulation of organic chemicals. However, differences in accumulation properties between different types of lipid (e.g., storage and membrane lipids) have rarely been considered. Moreover, in view of toxic effects on organisms, chemical accumulation specifically in biological membranes is of particular importance. In this review article, partition coefficients of 240 neutral organic compounds between liposomes (phospholipid membrane vesicles) and water (Klipw), reported in the literature or measured additionally for this work, were evaluated. Values of log Klipw and log Kow (octanol–water partition coefficients) differ by 0.4 on average. Polyparameter linear free energy relationships (PP-LFERs) can describe the log Klipw data even better (standard deviations = 0.28–0.31) than the log Kow model. Recent experimental data for highly hydrophobic compounds fit well to the PP-LFERs and do not indicate the existence of a previously postulated “hy...

TL;DR: Aortic dissections might be missed in patients with neurological symptoms but without pain, and Neurological findings in elderly hypertensive patients with asymmetrical pulses or cardiac murmur suggest dissection.
Abstract: Background and Purpose— Aortic dissection typically presents with severe chest or back pain. Neurological symptoms may occur because of occlusion of supplying vessels or general hypotension. Especi...
