TL;DR: It is shown that the strength of the covariations between neuronal activity and perceptual judgments progressively increases across cortical areas as the activity is transmitted from the primary somatosensory cortex to the premotor areas of the frontal lobe.
Abstract: When a sensory stimulus is presented, many cortical areas are activated, but how does the representation of a sensory stimulus evolve in time and across cortical areas during a perceptual judgment? We investigated this question by analyzing the responses from single neurons, recorded in several cortical areas of parietal and frontal lobes, while trained monkeys reported the presence or absence of a mechanical vibration of varying amplitude applied to the skin of one fingertip. Here we show that the strength of the covariations between neuronal activity and perceptual judgments progressively increases across cortical areas as the activity is transmitted from the primary somatosensory cortex to the premotor areas of the frontal lobe. This finding suggests that the neuronal correlates of subjective sensory experience gradually build up across somatosensory areas of the parietal lobe and premotor cortices of the frontal lobe.

TL;DR: It is suggested that S-RNase trafficking and the stability of HT-B are central to S-specific pollen rejection.
Abstract: Pollen-pistil interactions are crucial for controlling plant mating. For example, S-RNase-based self-incompatibility prevents inbreeding in diverse angiosperm species. S-RNases are thought to function as specific cytotoxins that inhibit pollen that has an S-haplotype that matches one of those in the pistil. Thus, pollen and pistil factors interact to prevent mating between closely related individuals. Other pistil factors, such as HT-B, 4936-factor and the 120 kDa glycoprotein, are also required for pollen rejection but do not contribute to S-haplotype-specificity per se. Here we show that S-RNase is taken up and sorted to a vacuolar compartment in the pollen tubes. Antibodies to the 120 kDa glycoprotein label the compartment membrane. When the pistil does not express HT-B or 4936-factor, S-RNase remains sequestered, unable to cause rejection. Similarly, in wild-type pistils, compatible pollen tubes degrade HT-B and sequester S-RNase. We suggest that S-RNase trafficking and the stability of HT-B are central to S-specific pollen rejection.

TL;DR: In this paper, the shutter problem is discussed for particles whose wave functions satisfy the Schr\"odinger equation, the ordinary wave equation, and the Klein-Gordon equation and the transient effects that appear when a shutter is opened are discussed.
Abstract: In a previous note a dynamical description of resonance scattering was given, and transient terms appeared in the wave function describing the process. To understand the physical significance of these terms, the transient effects that appear when a shutter is opened are discussed in this paper. For a nonrelativistic beam of particles, the transient current has a close mathematical resemblance with the intensity of light in the Fresnel diffraction by a straight edge. This is the reason for calling the transient phenomena by the name of diffraction in time. The shutter problem is discussed for particles whose wave functions satisfy the Schr\"odinger equation, the ordinary wave equation, and the Klein-Gordon equation. Only for the Schr\"odinger time-dependent equation do the transient wave functions resemble the solutions that appear in Sommerfeld's theory of diffraction. The connection of transient phenomena with the time-energy uncertainty relation, and the interpretation of the transient current in a scattering process, are briefly discussed. The relativistic wave functions for the shutter problem may play an important role in the dynamical description of a relativistic scattering process.

TL;DR: A catalog of major Chilean earthquakes (magnitude presumed greater than 7.5) is presented in this paper, where each event is accompanied by a description of effects, including tsunami observations, and estimates of epicentral location and magnitude.
Abstract: A catalog of major Chilean earthquakes (magnitude presumed greater than 7.5) is presented. This catalog is abstracted from a punched-card list of Chilean earthquakes with over 15,000 entries. Each event is accompanied by a description of effects, including tsunami observations, and estimates of epicentral location and magnitude. Major earthquakes in Chile occur in a small number of source areas. These are aligned offshore and along the range faults between the Coast Range and the Central Valley. In the Central Chile region, between Valparaiso and Concepcion, major earthquakes occur chiefly inland. From Concepcion to the south the major epicenters occur offshore. Each focal area produces a predictable pattern of seismic and tsunami effects.
