Addressing ethical issues in retailing: a stakeholder perspective

Abstract: This paper contends that, despite the dominance of the marketing paradigm in retail studies, benefits may be gained from applying stakeholder analysis to retailing. The development of stakeholder theory is outlined, and its problems and shortcomings reviewed. Notwithstanding these, retailing's stakeholders are defined in relation to "best practice". Examples of issues pertaining to stakeholder groups are given. Several ethical issues in retailing are then examined to demonstrate the benefits that accrue from applying a stakeholder approach. It is suggested that such a framework offers a broader perspective, and in particular that rising concern for ethical issues in retailing is better articulated through such a framework. The paper concludes such issues are better addressed when any retail marketing analysis is paralleled with a stakeholder analysis.

A study of the structural and catalytic effects of sulfation on iron oxide catalysts prepared from goethite and ferrihydrite precursors for methane oxidation

Abstract: A study of the effects of sulfation on the methane oxidation activity of iron oxide catalysts prepared from goethite and 2-line ferrihydrite precursors is presented. Although catalytic performance is found to be dependent upon the precursor, sulfation produces general effects in both systems. Surface area is increased, oxidation activity <400°C is suppressed, and that at 500°C is enhanced leading to the production of selective products. Despite these similarities, sulfation produces different structural effects in the two systems. In the case of iron oxide prepared from goethite, extensive pitting and an increase in disorder in the cationic arrangement are observed. In contrast, a slight increase in crystallinity of the iron oxide prepared from ferrihydrite occurs. The effect of sulfation on catalytic performance is interpreted in terms of a two-site mechanism, complexation poisoning Fe3+ sites active for the lower-temperature oxidation activity with additional sites active at higher temperature being produced.

From adolescent to adult gambling: an analysis of longitudinal gambling patterns in South Australia.

Abstract: Although there are many cross-sectional studies of adolescent gambling, very few longitudinal investigations have been undertaken. As a result, little is known about the individual stability of gambling behaviour and the extent to which behaviour measured during adolescence is related to adult behaviour. In this paper, we report the results of a 4-wave longitudinal investigation of gambling behaviour in a probability sample of 256 young people (50 % male, 50 % female) who were interviewed in 2005 at the age of 16-18 years and then followed through to the age of 20-21 years. The results indicated that young people showed little stability in their gambling. Relatively few reported gam- bling on the same individual activities consistently over time. Gambling participation rates increased rapidly as young people made the transition from adolescence to adulthood and then were generally more stable. Gambling at 15-16 years was generally not associated with gambling at age 20-21 years. These results highlight the importance of individual- level analyses when examining gambling patterns over time.

Why marketers need a new concept of culture for the global knowledge economy

Abstract: Marketers are berated for their dependence on Hofstede and his concept of culture which stems from nineteenth century anthropology. International marketing studies need a new approach to culture, which is consistent with the workings of the global knowledge economy. It is argued that it is no longer satisfactory to associate culture with markets perceived as national aggregates of characteristics. Rather culture is seen as a knowledge resource waiting to be discovered in marketing relationships and clusters of affinity. A five‐point scheme for the foundation of a new approach to culture is presented.
