Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to report the detailed findings of a Centre for Education in the Built Environment (CEBE) funded study into good practice in the use of blended learning in property education. “Blended learning” is a combination of face‐to‐face learning experiences and online learning experiences which aim to complement each other in order to support and enhance student learning. The aim of this paper is to examine the benefits that blended learning provides to students' learning experience and engagement in property education. Abstract: Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water reduction, converting solar energy into environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel, requires delicate design and synthesis of semiconductors with appropriate bandgaps, suitable energy levels of the frontier orbitals, and high intrinsic charge mobility. In this work, the synthesis of a novel bithiophene-bridged donor-acceptor-based 2D sp2 -carbon-linked conjugated polymer (2D CCP) is demonstrated. The Knoevenagel polymerization between the electron-accepting building block 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexa(4-formylphenyl) diquinoxalino[2,3-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (HATN-6CHO) and the first electron-donating linker 2,2'-([2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diyl)diacetonitrile (ThDAN) provides the 2D CCP-HATNThDAN (2D CCP-Th). Compared with the corresponding biphenyl-bridged 2D CCP-HATN-BDAN (2D CCP-BD), the bithiophene-based 2D CCP-Th exhibits a wide light-harvesting range (up to 674 nm), a optical energy gap (2.04 eV), and highest energy occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital distributions for facilitated charge transfer, which make 2D CCP-Th a promising candidate for PEC water reduction. As a result, 2D CCP-Th presents a superb H2 -evolution photocurrent density up to ≈7.9 µA cm-2 at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which is superior to the reported 2D covalent organic frameworks and most carbon nitride materials (0.09-6.0 µA cm-2 ). Density functional theory calculations identify the thiophene units and cyano substituents at the vinylene linkage as active sites for the evolution of H2 .

Abstract: Context: Strenuous exercise increases bone resorption but not formation. The effect of improved training status is unknown. Objective: Our objective was to examine the metabolic response of bone to strenuous running in recreationally active (RA) and endurance-trained (ET) men. Design: Eleven RA, 10 ET, and 10 control (CON) subjects completed one 8-d trial. On d 4, RA and ET completed an exhaustive treadmill run. Blood was obtained at baseline (BASE), during exercise, during 2 h of recovery, and on four follow-up (FU) days (FU1–FU4). CON rested throughout, providing blood samples at BASE and on FU1–FU4. Markers of bone resorption [C-terminal telopeptide region of collagen type 1 (β-CTX)] and bone formation [N-terminal propeptides of procollagen type 1 (P1NP) and bone alkaline phosphatase (ALP)], osteoprotegerin (OPG), PTH, albumin-adjusted calcium (ACa), and phosphate (PO4) were measured. Abstract: Responsible gambling tools (e.g., limit-setting tools, pop-up messages, and personalized feedback) have become increasingly popular as a way of facilitating players to gamble in a more responsible manner. However, relatively few studies have evaluated whether such tools actually work. The present study examined whether the use of three types of information (i.e., personalized feedback, normative feedback, and/or a recommendation) could enable players to gamble more responsibly as assessed using three measures of gambling behavior, i.e., theoretical loss (TL), amount of money wagered, and gross gaming revenue (GGR) (i.e., net win/loss). By manipulating the three forms of information, data from six different groups of players were analyzed. The participant sample drawn from the population were those that had played at least one game for money on the Norsk Tipping online platform (Instaspill) during April 2015. A total of 17,452 players were randomly selected from 69,631 players that fulfilled the selection criteria. Of these, 5,528 players participated in the experiment. Gambling activity among the control group (who received no personalized feedback, normative feedback or no recommendation) was also compared with the other five groups that received information of some kind (personalized feedback, normative feedback and/or a recommendation). Compared to the control group, all groups that received some kind of messaging significantly reduced their gambling behavior as assessed by TL, amount of money wagered, and GGR. The results support the hypothesis that personalized behavioral feedback can enable behavioral change in gambling but that normative feedback does not appear change behavior significantly more than personalized feedback.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate sex-related differences in explosive muscular force production, as measured by electromechanical delay (EMD) and rate of force development (RFD), and to examine the physiological mechanisms responsible for any differences. The neuromuscular performance of untrained males (n = 20) and females (n = 20) was assessed during a series of isometric knee extension contractions; explosive and maximal voluntary efforts, as well as supramaximal evoked twitches and octets (eight pulses at 300 Hz). Evoked and voluntary EMD were determined from twitch and explosive contractions. The RFD was recorded over consecutive 50 ms time windows from force onset during evoked and explosive contractions, and normalized to maximal strength. Neuromuscular activity during explosive voluntary contractions was measured with EMG of the superficial knee extensors normalized to maximal M-wave. Muscle size (thickness) and muscle-tendon unit (MTU) stiffness were assessed using ultrasonic images of the vastus lateralis at rest and during ramped contractions. Males and females had similar evoked and voluntary EMD. Males were 33% stronger (P 0.05). This was consistent with the similar normalized twitch and octet RFD, MTU stiffness and agonist EMG (all P > 0.05). When differences in maximal strength were accounted for, the evoked capacity of the knee extensors for explosive force production and the ability to utilize that capacity during explosive voluntary contractions was similar for males and females.
