TL;DR: The root cause of small business failure is almost invariably a lack of management attention to strategic issues as mentioned in this paper, and the multiplicity of roles expected of the owner-manager often causes dissonance which enhances the probability of poor decision making and inappropriate action.
Abstract: The majority of existing studies of small business failure tend to focus upon either the symptoms arising from problems within the firm or upon the reasons cited for failure. Comparatively little analysis of the root cause has been undertaken. Failure and success are usually defined in rational terms which ignore stakeholder aspirations. Many owner-managers pursue personal objectives which inhibit the probability of success if measured using these rational criteria. The root cause of small business failure is almost invariably a lack of management attention to strategic issues. Notwithstanding the fact that common skills and abilities are required, the management process in small firms is unique and cannot be considered to be the same as professional management in larger firms practised on a reduced scale. The multiplicity of roles expected of the owner-manager often causes dissonance which enhances the probability of poor decision making and inappropriate action. Successful small firms practise strategic management either consciously and visibily or unconsciously and invisibly.

TL;DR: This article argued that the linear attempt to transfer explicit management knowledge from the West to China is based on false assumptions about the nature of knowledge and so is unlikely to be effective and suggested that there needs to be an interaction between Chinese and Western ideas, which will benefit all parties.
Abstract: The economic reforms in the People’s Republic of China have begun to open up this very large market. However, a major impediment to quicker or more substantive growth has been the paucity of experienced Chinese managers. In response, there has been a very rapid growth in business and management education in China, especially in MBA education. Given that management as a discipline was not previously taught in China, much of the knowledge base for this education has been imported from the West. However, it is argued that the linear attempt to transfer explicit management knowledge from the West to China is based on false assumptions about the nature of knowledge and so is unlikely to be effective. Instead a community model of knowledge is presented, which suggests that there needs to be an interaction between Chinese and Western ideas, which will benefit all parties.

TL;DR: Broiler chickens, now unable to survive without human intervention, have a combined mass exceeding that of all other birds on Earth; this novel morphotype symbolizes the unprecedented human reconfiguration of the Earth's biosphere.
Abstract: Changing patterns of human resource use and food consumption have profoundly impacted the Earth's biosphere. Until now, no individual taxa have been suggested as distinct and characteristic new mor...

TL;DR: This special issue, "Men's health: Masculinity and other influences on male health behaviors," brings together a range of psychological research that demonstrates how masculinities work in different health-related situations, ranging from lifestyle choices to life-threatening diseases.
Abstract: Objective: Mortality and morbidity statistics show that men on average die younger than women and are more prone to many nongendered illnesses. Social constructions of masculinity have been implicated in men's poorer health, although it is now recognized that masculinity is a complex, multifaceted entity, elements of which can prove health-promoting. Methods: This special issue, "Men's health: Masculinity and other influences on male health behaviors," brings together a range of psychological research that demonstrates how masculinities work in different health-related situations, ranging from lifestyle choices to life-threatening diseases. Results: A cross-cutting theme concerns how masculine "capital" can function to both constrain and open up healthy practices. In the first of two sections, seven papers focus on public health issues, including physical exercise, alcohol consumption, and help-seeking. The second section then covers illness-related phenomena, including male-specific cancers, sports-induced disability, and male sterilization. These six papers examine how masculinities inhibit and promote coping with difficult embodied states with different groups of men. Conclusions: This special issue offers important insights on masculinities and health from methodologically diverse investigations, and highlights how masculinities can be deployed to improve the health of men across different contexts.
